What Colored Hat Am I Wearing?

seems moss ain't growing on many here at DC

    anyone up for early release??

the prison warden is making some 'guests' an offer they shouldn't refuse...
    something along the lines of---

Each of 3 prisoners has served half of their rather long sentences.

The warden calls them into a room and on a table are 5 hats: 3 white and 2 red.
    He tells the prisoners that he is going to blindfold the 3 of them and have them stand facing the wall—1st guy has his nose to the wall, the 2nd guy is behind the 1st and the 3rd guy behind both;
all in a line facing the wall.
The warden tells them that he will than mix up the hats and put one on each of their heads and the remaining 2 hats in a closed closet.
He will than, one at a time, from back to front, take off their blind fold and they may look at what’s in front of them. Now, if you can tell me the color of your hat and how you know it to be true, you go free.
If you are wrong I’ll double your sentence.

He proceeds to do as he said and takes off the blindfold of man #3 (the one furthest from the wall); and man 3 says he does not know his color.
Man 2’s blindfold is removed and he also says he does not know what color his hat is.
Man 1 who can only see the wall, has his blindfold removed and says—“I know what color my hat is and why”.

He tells the warden the color, he is right; and he tells him why, and he is also right
    And he goes free.

So, what was his color and what did he say?

--->some are going to get this fast; if you can, please PM me
so as to allow others to stiil work it out. thank you.

clues are free (2) for the asking.

I understand it, although it can get a bit complicated in my sleepy head if I think about it to much.

Yeah, for a while I was sure that there was no way to know, so I pulled out the logic and accidentally tripped over the answer.

    Can I call a friend?

It took me a couple of minutes.

I just can't come up with a way unless I have more information. If the guy in question can only see the wall then to my way of thinking he has no way to know what the other two guys are wearing and therefore can't eliminate any hats. He would just be making a guess based upon the 60/40 odds.

Am I missing something? Am I not reading the problem right?
