I'm afraid that simply carrying a pistol on this hiking expedition would have been fruitless.
Making a lot of noise prior to a surprise encounter could have helped a lot...mama bears do not like threats around their babies.

Once they feel threatened it will take alot to get her to stop unless you are very close and have a large pistol and place some good shots and idk how well the pepper spray would even work in this situation

    And that Sign is hilarious

I've seen that sign before...it's great!
When wild animals are not hunted, they lose their fear of humans. Without that fear, we are simply food to them. A sow with cubs is BAD NEWS. A momma anything is bad news when protecting her young, even dogs and cats.

This was unwelcome news as I am going there with family in a couple weeks. We plan to do some hiking, not back country stuff, just popular short trails. We will observe "bear sense" and will be carrying bear spray and a couple .357 mags.

Seems like this guy just got really unlucky... Maybe he could have done something different, but surprising a momma bear is going to end poorly either way.

They were not too wise. They saw the sow and cubs once while hiking and continued on. The next time they saw her she was charging.

Federal sells a hard cast, gas checked load with nickel plated cases: Premium Castcore 180gr for the 357; 250gr for the 41mag; and 300gr for the 44mag. I would rather treat bears like snakes. It's better to avoid them than to shoot them. I would especially hate to have to brain a momma with cubs. Seeing the bear the first time should have served as sufficient warning, but they ignored it. The sign is a stitch, but some people who think they know everything wouldn't bother reading it.

Will do, Hiram. With a half dozen of us counting kids, I expect that we will be louder than any bells.

    Its sad that this happened.

I'm surprised people would go hiking in such a huge park unarmed.

If you mean firearms, its just within the last few years that it has been legal to carry firearms in national parks.
