And it gets ever-harder to justify not drawing the moment I feel like someone could attack me, weapon or not.

Just remember, for every single case you can bring forward of the one punch and dead scenario the prosecutor can bring forward hundreds of thousands of fights where no long term injuries were encountered.

True, but how am I to know how I'll react to being punched? I've never been punched before and I'd prefer not to find out.

Ever been hit by lightning? Better odds of that than getting killed by the one punch fight.

Nope. Don't care to try that one either.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't look forward to having to shoot someone. Not in the least. I also don't enjoy the thought of having my nose broken by someone who matches my size, but turns out to be a brown belt in Jiujitsu.

Better yet, if an argument is escalating never put both hands in your pockets. Bad, bad defensive tactics.

I'm surprised to see that some of you are even thinking about a weapon. A gun is a LAST RESORT weapon. Pulling one or shooting someone in a situtation like that will land you in jail. Situtations like that are why it is important to have other skills and not just a gun. There are other areas close to the jaw that will drop someone like a rock if you know where to hit them so I would suspect that he probably connected one of those other points. Still rare to kill someone with one punch.

This is so tricky, it really does put the defender in an almost impossible situation. It is sometimes impossible to know in even a split second's advance that someone is just yelling, is going hit you unexpectedly, or that it will stop with a single blow. A vicious attacker may not necessarily start a confrontation with warning words or threat-- they'll just do it. Or, they will escalate unexpectedly at some imagined slight on the defender's part.

"Fear for your life" is a pretty amorphous standard. "Reasonable person" is also an amorphous standard. Both mean you will always be second guessed. Its a losing legal position to be in.

Some people like myself would have a lot easier time justifying the use of deadly force to stop a perceived threat,I carry pepper spray sometimes, but with only one good hand to manipulate either spray or a firearm unless the threat has a weapon like a knife I'm gonna spray him if I'm perceiving a threat after doing everything I can to deescalate it. I have a fused neck I broke in 1992,I can't run or move quickly have numerous physical disabilities, and even tho My neck is screwed back together I'm not so sure a punch couldn't cause a dislocation resulting in death,or permanent total paraplegia,I'm diagnosed as an incomplete quadraplegic.
It sounds like somebody got drunk possibly said something racial and instead of laughing it off and walking away the guy is now facing Prison.

Beyond a reasonable doubt! Defense Lawyer, has there ever been a case where one punch has killed a man? You, yes. Defense Lawyer, then you can honestly say that you were in fear for your life? You, yes.

The other option is to act civilly, not engage in name calling or insulting strangers, and remove yourself from any negative situations. I think all CWP'ers find a change in their demeanor once they strap up. It's not about being a tough guy, it's about avoiding situations that have bad outcomes. And that's the responsibility of having the ability to levy lethal force.
