I wonder what thee tree was doing when it was attacked. Do they have any leads on the assailant or did he leaf the scene of the crime?

Just because there was a battle near by why do the soldiers get blamed?
They may be barking up the wrong tree here. It may have been squirrel hunters, after all it was an oak tree likely with lots of acorns. I hear tell that "barking" of squirrels was a popular way to hunt them by the locals.
