Teen Branded Felon For Life....
Couple of 15 and 16 year old wannabe gangsters rob a 73 year old man.
The reason they only got 7 cents is because that's all the victim had.
Sounds like the 15 year old got off easy to me.

I only have sympathy for the victim on this one.

Stewart's lawyer, Laurin Haddad, had pleaded with Walsh to treat her client as a youthful offender, so that a felony conviction wouldn't remain on his permanent record.
"
For 7 cents, now you're making someone a felon for the rest of his life," Haddad told the Post-Standard.
So the Judge and not the act of doing the crime made him a felon?

That's what comes of not teaching the young people of this land that there are consequences for your actions. No kid left behind, nobody loses, etc., along with driving religious beliefs out of the schools, this is what we get.

All I can say is good. If a kid does something stupid like this he should expect to be labelled a felon.

A JURY no less. Good for them! 2 to 6 is getting off easy and he's lucky he wasn't given a hot lead injection from the victim.

Its not the amount of money involved. It is the assault, and perhaps too that it was on a senior. Many states have laws that enhance crimes done against the elderly.
OTOH, @ 15, shouldn't we be talking juvenile court? Rehabilitation? Expunge the record in the future?
OTOH again, if the old boy had put a hole in the kid we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Youthful offenders often believe that they can play the system. Sometimes they're wrong.

It's everyones fault. As you all are well aware, "it takes a village to raise a child". It's not the "parent" fault, it's their environment, their poverty, their abusive upbringing, their blah, blah, blah... No one should be held accountable for personal responsibility, respect for humanity or self dignity. We owes them more in social handouts to help curb the crimes between drug fixes.

+1. This is what the kid needs to take away from this, I hope he learns something.

Hey, the kid rolled the dice with the justice system and it came up snake eyes. The victim ID'd the kid and the kid's accomplice gave it up, but he hung on to his lie the whole trip. Seems like bad choices are his trademark.
Kudos to the judge for having the backbone to do the right thing.

And after a few years in a juvi facility, is he going to come out rehabilitated, seeing the error of his ways or is he going to come out a hardened criminal and do something worse?
Not saying that I don't applaud the judge for sending a strong message, but I would be concerned about the consequences of that message too.
Edit, the more I think about it, the more I wonder if we took the approach of "putting em down like a rabid dog", if more parents might start to take responsibility for and give more consideration tor their children's upbringing? Just saying...
