How about that I now know three people older than me. Chris (P95Carry), Smokey the Bear, and Captain Crunch.![]()
Hey, Captain, did you ever know the original Captain Crunch? Mike Kolen linebacker for the Miami Dolphins from 1970-1977. He played on both Super Bowl Championship Dolphins teams, including the 1972 UNDEFEATED team (17-0). I was just talking to a friend about Mike the other day. Mike and I were at Auburn University together and had more than a few classes together. I remember him, but I doubt he remembers me. Anyway when I saw your name on this thread I wondered if you had ever known or known about him.

George,
Geez, here I was thinking I was the original Captain Crunch. I didn't know that Mike Kolen beat me to it.
Actually, I picked up that moniker at about the same time frame (early 70s). I was a LEO in Alaska at the time. One morning, after a graveyard shift, I was sitting in the squad room eating a bowl of Cap'n Crunch cereal. One of my buddies came in and bestowed that name on me, and it stuck.
I still have a box of Cap'n Crunch cereal that I bought in Canada, but it's labeled in French, Capitaine Crouche.

Mike admits that he doesn't know when he got the nickname, but he had it while still at Auburn. He and I graduated in 1970. One of the other team members was one who nicknamed everybody and he bestowed the name on Mike because he liked to crunch quarterbacks.
I wonder if that's how John "Rat" Riley got his nickname? He was the fieldgoal kicker for Auburn at the same time.
I like the French version.
