Had Horrible Customer Service @ Dick's Sporting Goods Today

Had Horrible Customer Service @ Dick's Sporting Goods Today

I stopped at Dick's Sporting Goods today to pick up a fleece jacket. I work inside but sometimes it gets cold enough in there to kill hogs.

As I was making a quick browse of the store to get an idea about the selection that is available, I stopped in the hunting section. I scanned the knives and noticed that they mostly have Buck, Kershaw and Gerber Bear Grylls models.

As I was scanning their wall of shotguns, I asked the guy at the counter about tactical shotguns. I asked if Remington has an automatic tactical in which he said, yes but didn't say anymore. I asked him if it was the 11-87 model and he said, yes. When I asked him the length of the gun, he said 18 1/2 inches. When I inquired about price, he simply said he didn't know. He never offered to find out, tell me to get lost or anything. He just left it at that and started to glance at a catalog he had in front of him. I asked him the same questions about Benelli and he told me that the Benelli Tac auto is the M4 but he didn't know how much it is, maybe 13-15 hundred, he said. He never offered to make an effort to inquire about pricing or anything like that, etc.

I thanked him for his time and he immediately started to look at a catalog at the counter.

As I was leaving, I was thinking to myself, what a bum!

As I've stated in other threads when we were talking about Kimber customer service, I used to be in customer service and since then, poor customer service has become a pet peeve of mine. I hate poor customer service and it annoys me to the point to where it almost angers me.

I realize I wasn't there shopping for shotguns per se but tell me, what else did the guy have to do? He was already at work and had to put his time in, why not do something work related? Would it have really killed him to check into some simple pricing? Lately on here, we'ver been talking about the economy. You would think with a down turned economy, inquiring patrons would at least be given the consideration or benefit of the doubt that their inquiry could possibly turn into a sale.

Perhaps the brush off I was given was due to the sales clerk assuming that I wasn't going to buy a shotgun today. If I had been seriously thinking about buying one today, I'm not sure what my reaction would have been. Part of me says to leave the store and not give them the satisfaction of getting my money and the other part of me says to inform the manager of the sale they have just lost because I had a clerk that would not properly assist me. Either way, they would have lost a sale. I'm still not sure if I'll ever go back when I'm ready to buy a tac shotty. It looks like Bud's will probably get my business. I've never been in there while browsing the counter and not have someone ask me if they could help me.

On a positive note, I did get a nice catalog full of shotties that should make some good bed-time reading and I did get a good deal on a fleece jacket I had been wanting. I got a Columbia for $35 that was listed for $50.00.

I'm posting a picture of my jacket and for your enjoyment, I threw a little knife porn in there as well; my Spyderco Delica 4.

Sounds to me like a manager needs to be notified, sounds like somebody collecting a paycheck that figures the less he has to do the better off, even if you weren't buying today,Great CS can bring you back in to buy there even if they might be a couple of dollars higher than a competitor

Look at the name of the store! That should explain it all. I've had awful customer service there as well...

They're another typical big box retailer. However, a call to the manager would be in order. You never know, you may need or want to buy something from them at some point in the future and could be helping yourself.

I agree....I had a similar experience. When I was purchasing a Walther P22, my NICS check was held up (never happens)...I didn't have all day to wait. Went back the next day--turns out they had my name, but someone else's information inputted in the system. I told them to look at the 4473...NICS got held up again. Went home. The next day I called and they told me the one person who handles all of the NICS call-backs wasn't in yet (this was at 1300)...so I told them to nevermind. If they really wanted by business, I'd should have gotten a call this morning...now they are pushing me to a 3rd day?

Nope...went to a local FFL, did the NICS, walked out 30 mins later.

If it was in Lexington, I know what you mean.

I do not put up with poor service or rude behavior anymore. I will put them on the spot right in front of everyone. I'll say something like, " so tell me, what do you get paid to do?". Or, " hey! I asked a damn question, does it take a manager to answer it, or are you allowed to speak?".

I think we should all confront this type of lackadaisical attitude/service, and force the issue. Just my not-so humble opinion.

I choose to give my money to the local Gander Mountain over Dicks Sporting Goods anytime. All around, shopping there is usually a much greater experience.

How much competition does "Dick" have in your town? It's amazing how much a couple of new big box stores setting up shop in your town can improve Dick's attitude toward his customers. I've seen it happen.

My experience has been that the rude clerks at gun counters are the ones who are really not knowledgeable about the product they are selling. These types think that their arrogance will mask their ignorance. I haven't observed rudeness coming from those who really know and like guns.

People who work in gun stores seem to either be extremely helpful or total jerks. There's no in between. A lot of them give you that condescending "here's another idiot I have to deal with" look if you even bother to ask a question. However, occassionally you get a pleasant surprise. When I bought my Bushmaster, the salesman asked if I knew how to field strip it. I replied that I didn't. This was my first one.

"Here let me show you real quick" and he field stripped it right there on the counter. I've never had anybody do that before. He went over all the lube points, reassembled it and said "Congratulations on your new gun".

I don't accept it either. I'll address it in store, if I don't have time I'll lodge a complaint by phone. On the flip side, I will not take excellent service for granted and go out of my way to get the name and commend them to the store manager.

I only use DSG to get the kids their sporting equipment.

Sorry to hear you were treated crappy. That was inexcusable, for all he knew, you were there to buy a shotgun.
I stopped putting up with it years ago. I have the rude/unattentive clerk call the Mgr. and I proceed to tell the Mgr. about the poor service I recieved from his employee right in front of the clerk.
I do my level best to embarrass them in front of their boss.
