    Brain Teaser

Anybody feel like solving a riddle?

    Here goes:

You are walking on a path in the forest when you come to a fork in the path.

If you take the left fork, you will meet certain death.

If you take the right fork, you will live.

There is a guard at the head of each fork.

One guard always lies and the other guard always tells the truth.

You do not know which is which, and you may ask only one question of one of them.

What is the question that will allow you to proceed safely?

Let's let it run for awhile. If nobody has the solution, I'll post it.

When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Just roll to your rifle and blow out your brains,
And go to your God like a soldier.

    Answer

Go up to either one of them and ask which path the other would send you down and go the other way. The person who always tells the truth would know the other would send you down the wrong path. The one who lies would know the other one would send you down the right path and would lie to you about it.

    Correctamundo!

Mike, you sure took the wind out of my sails!

BTW, I'm guessing you're military, right? This riddle has a military origin, it was popular with the POWs in the Hanoi Hilton.

I have previously heard and like this riddle. However, due to the quoted statements, I will take the right fork, no questions asked!

That should probably have read; If you take one fork you will meet certain death, if you take the other you will live.

The problem with this approach is that you have no guarantee that the honest guard cares whether you live or die and the dishonest guard wants you to die.

this was used in the 1986 movie "Labyrinth"

in the movie "Sarah" (the main character) was put into a situation where she had to choose between 2 doors, one leads to the castle and the other certian death... The rest was the same as this "brain teaser".

You're right, of course. I shouldn't have specified "right" or "left", just that one path will lead to death, the other path will lead to safety. My mistake.

    Here's the solution I read:

You ask either guard "If I ask the other guard which is the road to safety, what will he tell me?"

And then you take the opposite path.
