I didn't go looking for a fight but one found me

As I was ending my day as a high school teacher, I walked up to hall and ran into two girls fighting. They were really going at it and throwing punches in the head. Being the only adult around I had to break up the situation. Itís not part of my job as a teacher, but I felt it was necessary to keep them from seriously injuring each other.

If you ever ran into this out in the real world what would you do? Obviously, there are limitations to what I can do as a teacher, but what if this happened off campus. Would you intervene? Would you just call 911?

If we're talking mutual combatants going at it, I'm going to call 911. No way I'm getting into the middle of a full on cat fight.

Blame it on Sixto - now that is a viable plan.

Little to be gained by intervening, but much to be lost. I'd be inclined to call 911 and let the police deal with the combatants, lest you become the target for both of their wrath by getting between them.

Would have to be a person I know and like before I'd step in. Stick your nose in that and you would find both of them after you likely as not.

It would have to be an extreme circumstance before I would involve myself as a civillian in physically managing 2 young girls fighting.

You are kind of in a no-win situation.

If you intervene, you might get hurt or worse, have one of those girls accuse you of somehing inappropriate, even though they were fighting. Not good.

If you stand by and do nothing or call 911, then you will be accused of not doing enough to stop the fight. You might even get sued for not taking action.

Kind of a darned if you do or don't situation.

Done it several times. My neighborhood is full of teenage boys, and teenage girls. Throw some testosterone kicking in with girls trying to dress too maturely for their years and....

In short, I'm fully capable of handling two teenagers in conflict, and I refuse to be one of those "it's not my business" people that won't get involved. The fact is two teenage girls, as in this case, pose little threat to me personally, but much more so to each other.

Walk slow....send the winner to the principal's office, the loser to the nurse. Frankly, I wouldn't risk getting injured by a couple of punks duking it out. However, if there is a size disparity, I might step in. I'd also call the school RSO

If you choose to go that route I suggest that you avail yourself of assistance if possible for both use as help with the physical management to minimize injury risk to the kids and as witness to the approprietness of the level of restraint used.

DUDE! You never break up a girl fight. You video it for Youtube. :)

Seriously, though if it's not part of your responsibilities as a teacher, and you get involved and perhaps injure one of them pulling them apart you are probably going to get charged.

    LOL ^^^^
I wouldn't come between them unless one was on the verge of death. Its not my fight and I have no "dog" in it. Also I don't know the history there. You as a principal have a responsibility to do this with students though. Different scenario

I would not intervene until it comes to the point of stopping someone from being stomped to death.

Yeah, I remember those. But it was teen guys at a previous job. And I was trained in physical restraints and crisis intervention. If it was neighborhood kids, I would probably step in. The kids that would likely start it already hate me so nothing to loose. Out and about, it would be completely situational. But I would lean more towards calling the pros and staying out of it.

Most of it depends on variables of the situation not addressed here. In school, you being a teacher... yeah, its part of your job. It shouldn't be, but it is. Strangers on the street? Not a chance. Neighborhood kids? Yeah probably. But it depends on the kids and the neighborhood.
