Self-defense shooting, The Stupid
A guy on one of my other forums posted this
"Look what I found in my garage today !
I heard a noise coming from what I thought was the air compressor.. sounded like the petcock under the tank had sprung a leak. So I lifted up the compressor and saw it .I was with-in 2 feet of that sucker ... (photo of dead rattlesnake) Shot it with shell shot from a .22 about 5 times from 2 feet away . Then a .22 long .Dragged it outside for the pictures ."
Bonehead. I would not have bragged about any of this. My air compressor probably weighs 300 Lbs. It took 6 shots to kill a snake? It appears that unless he missed with the first 5, "snake shot" doesn't even work on snakes. I would not fire anything in my garage, too many thing like acetylene cylinders and hydrochloric acid bottles around. A shovel does the job just fine and then the wife doesn't get all nervous about snakes for the next 6 months.

I would have wanted to shoot it, but would not have, lol. I wonder what happened to all the ricochets? I cannot imagine just onloading on it....of course , I live in the city and have people, dogs ,and birds I live with. Not to mention my boat, gas cans and such in the garage. Not a smart move.

Unless he shot it in the head, 12 gauge buckshot wouldn't make much difference. Even if you cut the head off, it'll still light you up if it can reach you while it dies.
Our horses understood this very well. I'd find hoof-shaped heads on just about any snake in the pasture.

Handgun "snakeshot" is woefully anemic. It's fun to play around with but, not really good for much.

Well, if it is any consolation, the Bonehead is probably deaf now too.

What a bonehead. He shot at it UNDERNEATH a compressed air cylinder? Too bad he didn't hit the cylinder and rid the world of his genes...

I probably wouldn't have wanted to kill such a thing, but my wife would have demanded it. She demands all life-forms that have no legs or more than 4 legs are immediately to be executed without a trial. I've tried to reason with her. Even lizards that get into our home (assuming the cat doesn't catch it first) are to be killed. If she's not home I'll just pick them up and take them outside and let them go.
A rattlesnake, on the other hand... well, I suppose that is a danger to people around and even if I coaxed it back outside I guess it might still be a danger to neighborhood kids. So I suppose I'd have to kill it one way or the other. I'd probably use my pump BB rifle. I've killed rattlesnakes with it before. It is dead accurate. I've actually used it to shoot individual wasps from 10 or 15 feet away and killed them. One shot to the head from a BB will take out a snake.

A long handled hoe is just the thing for rattle snakes. Good reach and heavy enough to do the deed.

I have never seen a compressed air cylinder that a .22 would penetrate. Snake shot penetrates even less.
If he'd have just shot it in the head with the first round of snake shot it would have been over right them.

I see rattlesnakes a lot, I give them their space and they leave me alone. However, it's not going to work out in my garage. I wouldn't be shooting it in there though. Maybe a mouse on a long string as I drag the mouse outside to lure it out ??? LOL.
The last time I found a testy sucker in the garage at the farm, it resulted in using a 16 lb sledge. I threw it like you would roll a bowling ball and it smacked his head up against the foot high cement border foundation.
Now if it was a bull snake, I'ld just keep doing whatever I was doing..... they won't hang around unless there are mice and other critters that need eaten. A good bull snake is a good thing to have around and they won't bother anyone.

My wife freaks out when she sees a cockaroach(sic)I'm pretty sure if she saw a rattler I wouldn't be able to get in the house for awhile, until she saw proof it was dead

Thats the best reason for a quiet kill, what she don't know wont bother you. My wife would be snake scared for months. I usually leave them alone, but in a populated area I can see the reason for eradication, cats will fill the void as vermin eaters.
