The cartoon has a lot of wisdom in it. The part about the labor unions being banned by the state reminded me of some recent events (Ohio, Wisconsin). Capitalism is as much of an ISM as communism, socialism, and despotism. There is no more entitlement to profit than there is to food stamps. A govt designed to support capital-ISM is just as doomed as the others. Interesting how the constitution doesn't specify an ISM framework.

Capitalism is an economic system, not a government institution. We're a free market economy true, but would you prefer communism?

That is somewhat debatable, at least in terms of the American model. Strictly speaking, this country is a constitutional republic, but it has become intimately intertwined with the concept of capitalism.

With respect to would I rather have communism? No, I wouldn't, at least how I think of it in terms of places like Cuba, China, N. Korea, and the Soviet Union.

This is not to say that capitalism is not corrupt-able, as clearly it is. I don't believe our market economy is nearly as free as some would tell us it is. These regulated markets are just as subject to corruption as we like to believe communism is.

I agree that our economy is anything but free. However, the corrupt aspects of capitalism typically involve paying off gov't officials who are meddling with the private sector. Take out the gov't goons & regulations, and it becomes more competitive based on quality and ability to execute. IMHO, of course.

Slowly, my thinking is turning in this direction, at least to the point where I consider my self curious. I find it fascinating that those that support this type of philosophy are marginalized by the corporations and media and ostracized by the main stream (bought) politicians. I wonder why they don't want this to come about.

Edit: I think recent years have seen a different kind of corruption, legalizing activity that should be prohibited through legislation and eliminating the ability of the markets to prevent it, all in the name of profit.

I'm not so sure "unions were banned by state" as much as some much needed reform was done. The state employee's union had some sweetheart deals cooked up that ran costs up for everyone. No flexibility whatsoever. And asking state employees to kick in a little more for their healthcare/pension funds is hardly "union busting."

Everyone who operates a business expects to operate at a profit. If they don't, they go out of business. Certainly they're not "entitled" to profit. But that's up to the market, not the government and over-regulation.
I think, therefore I am armed.
