    Personally I always give 20-25% unless the service is terrible. If the service is terrible I give nothing.
    I was always told that if the service is substandard that you should leave a penny. If you leave no tip they just assume that you are cheap. If you leave a penny they know what your intent was. I was told this by different people in the business.

    The reason we tip is that these people only make something like $2/hr and rely on tips to earn a decent wage. It's sort of the ultimate pay for performance scenario. Imagine if CEO's had to rely on tips...
    This no longer applies in many places anymore. They combine all the tips and divide them up equally at the end of the day. Just another disincentive to working harder if you ask me.
