    What is This?

OK, I work on a college campus (Facilities Manager) and one of my guys brought me an item that I've never seen before, and I was wondering if anyone here knows what it is:

It looks like it could be a shell casing (it's a bit smaller than a .223), but that whole expanding length bit has me really confused. It looks like it has an oversized primer on the back end of it with a capital E, reminiscent of the E on Eley match ammo.

    Any ideas?

Got me, at first glance it appeared to be a headspace gauge but I have never seen one that telescopes.

It looks like a broken shell extractor in 5.56 the M16/AR15 round.

When the bolt sheers off the rim a spent round it gets lodged in the chamber. A broken shell extractor aids in the removal of the damaged casing.

I have one for my Mosin-Nagant just in the event the extractor rips the rim off of a casing.

Thanks for the replies! Now for the next question: how did it get on a college campus?

It's a shell casing from an expanding, telescoping, inter-continental ballistic, heat-seaking, laser guided, armor-piercing, smart bullet. As for why it's on campus, you may have some mallninjas in the area.

It looks like the shaft off of a water or gas meter lock.

    agreed
thats what it looks like to me too
