Cattle are at record prices so this isn't too uncommon. It probably didn't quite weigh 220. Usually guys like this drive down country roads looking for baby calves, throw them in the outfit and head for a sales barn or try to sell them through radio call-in shows. I'm busy calving and haven't been to a sale lately, but I imagine baby calves are bringing around $400. If it was a baby calf it probably weighed about 100 pounds. Pretty hard to capture a 220 pound calf unless you're horseback but it could be done. Years ago when prices were high a highway patrolman pulled over a pickup and camper headed from Montana into North Dakota. The camper was filled with stolen baby calves. He was driving east to an area that had no brand inspection laws.

A cop stops them and says” you need to take that cow to the zoo”. Two days later the same cop stops them again and says” I thought I told you to take that cow to the zoo and they replies “we did; she liked so much we are going back”

This has been going on the last couple years. Its calving season and sometimes calves will lay down right next to the fence on the road and people will steal them. I calve my cows out as close to my house as possible and check on them many times a day. If one is laying near the fence I get him up and make him move further away. Guys around here have started moving their fences further off the road to keep calves: one from getting hit and two from getting stolen.
Cattle rustling should still be a hanging offense.
Scrap iron has been disappearing also.

Oh...please tell me, the one in the back seat didn't have lipstick and lingerie on that calf.

About a week ago a man in North Stonington Ct. wanted for cattle rustling turned himself in to the police.
