Toy grenade prompts NYC office building evacuation

NEW YORK (AP) A gag grenade mounted on a plaque that said "Complaint department: Take a number" led to the evacuation Thursday of an office building near ground zero, and the employee responsible for it was put on administrative leave.

The package was discovered in a mail room. It was a fake, 1940s-style pineapple grenade mounted on a plaque, with a number one attached to the pin.

The police bomb squad was called to 2 World Financial Center in lower Manhattan at midday when a security guard reported a mail-order package that seemed suspicious. Brookfield Properties, which runs the property, ordered an evacuation as a precaution.

I do not know how many of these I have seen over the years and have even assembled a few myself and have never seen anyone go into an absolute panic over seeing one either.

Typical New Yorker over reaction to things.

There are some good people in the state but they are out numbered by the kooks.

When I heard that it was a novelty item, I said "Where has everyones common sense gone?". It would have probably taken two minutes to confirm that the address it was shipped from carried this item and a phone call to the guy who had it shipped to him could confirm it. Come on! Even if it was a real grenade it will not take down a skyscraper. Why evacuate the whole building? Crazy I tell ya.

WHEC.....it makes perfect sense that you would have that.

It's the world trade center and it was in the mail room. They xray packages

Maybe a bit of an overreaction, but had it been real and gone off panic could have been worse. Security errs on the side of caution more now since 9/11 when they didn't begin immediate evacuation.

We were passing a similar toy grenade (complete with ticking sound effects) around the company staff meeting last week.

Yes, I know grenades don't tick, but this one did... it was a toy, dang it.

My kid has one of those and I warned him about taking it to school.
It is surely true that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Nor can you make them grateful for your efforts.

I'm from NY and now only visit to see family. It has changed so much over the years. It is certainly a Nanny state now... particularly the city... It is sooo simple to check to see if the "grenade" was real or not. Even the xray would tell them immediately. I think it is more training needed of the xray operators than anything else... besides, a grenade does need to have its pin pulled to work...

The northeast has been emasculated by liberalism. I feel sorry for the real men stuck living there surrounded by wimps.
