That isn't the correct quote. Here is what Washington actually said:

A free people ought not only to be armed but disciplined; to which end a uniform and well digested plan is requisite: And their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories, as tend to render them independent on others, for essential, particularly for military supplies.
That's from guncite, which has a good section on bogus pro-gun quotes.

"A free people ought to be armed."

    VS

"A free people ought not only to be armed but disciplined."

That's not a trivial difference. And when taken in context, it can be used to support gun control as much as oppose it.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

George Washington told me that Thomas Jefferson said something like that.
"One of the greatest delusions in the world is the hope that the evils in this world are to be cured by legislation."
    --Thomas B. Reed, American Attorney

Second Amendment -- Established December 15, 1791 and slowly eroded ever since What happened to "..... shall not be infringed."
