Nonsense...tax payers are NOT paying for any such thing. No where does it say they spent a dime researching mermaids. All they did was make a statement that mermaids don't exist.

It might pay off if they funded a study that studies the ones who study mermaids.

Hmm. I don't think blondes exists. Quick, get the Feds to do a study. Oh, and I want to be one of the researchers. Yeah.

Of course they spent money. How could they make the statement that mermaids DON'T exist if they haven't researched it? Otherwise, how do they know they don't exist?

I can see someone going for a privately-funded grant to pursue such questions (no matter how ridiculous), but it's hard to accept that the (ostensibly) People's governing staff commits such fraud and malfeasance as occurs all over ('fat,' euphemistically speaking).

What report? There is NO report. Your making that up.

One person...a representative made a statement there has never been any evidence to support any such claim. No research or studies were done or paid for by tax payers.

I'm not saying that the government wastes tax dollars, but if you look up the word waste in the dictionary, you'll find a group photo of Congress next to it.

They do much research in the ocean and have for many years. There has never been any evidence that has surfaced to support such a mystical claim. If they said Zeus doesn't exist or Thor doesn't exist would that automatically mean they have done studies on that also? Of course not, since there has never been ANY evidence to support such a claim. These claims of money spent on 'reports' are as whimsical as the characters described.

In real life we have to check what others tell us against a mix of our own experience, knowledge and common sense.
When something seems absurd, it often is, and is not real.

It would be absurd for anyone to spend a dime actually researching this, so common sense suggests that
the story is either not true, or is some gross distortion of what was really actually done and said.

Now some folks will come back and claim that "common sense" doesn't apply to what government does.
That is a nice wise-acre come back, but quite divorced from how things are actually done.

Remember, everything must start with Congress (The House) making some sort of an appropriation to fund
whatever. Long before something is put in a budget proposal for Congress to consider there are layers of
management and often outside "consultants" or "reviewers" who score the proposal.

A claim that one needs to research the existence of mermaids is so absurd on its face it would go nowhere in any
    budget development and authorization.

Usually when you hear claims of the absurd, a deeper look will find they are exaggerations, fabrications, distortions,
jokes on the media, and all manner of stuff but the truth.
If the Union is once severed, the line of separation will grow wider and wider, and the controversies which are now debated and settled in the halls of legislation will then be tried in fields of battle and determined by the sword.

You need to quit looking at whether or not the research is worth the expense and instead see it for what it is. A jobs program. Very much similar to a bridge to nowhere or a six lane highway that only serves ten vehicles a day. It is an excuse to give money away.
