Mass Murder, Pre-Pistol
I didn't write it so please don't go postal on me but I thought it was interesting
The shooting spree that killed 12 people in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater on Friday has sparked a public debate about the availability of automatic weapons. Gun control advocates argue that mass murder is exceedingly difficult without them. One source told the Washington Post, “It’s kind of hard to be a pseudo-commando with a musket in the 18th century.” How did people commit mass murder before the advent of automatic weapons?

Even with automatic weapons available Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacey, Dennis Rader and Gary Ridgway along with many others did not need or use them. And they each were quite successful in their endeavors.
When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk.

Do you think in the 1800 someone was trying to ban bill hooks?

Those were serial killers killing one at a time (mostly... Bundy killed at least two people together). Mass murderers not mentioned in the article that didn't use automatic weapons include Timothy McVeigh and the 9/11 hijackers, though.

Mass murder was very hard until they started trying to prevent people from carrying. Back in old west when everyone carried they had less murder than now. Back then you pulled your gun odds were somebody was gonna shoot your ass, so you only pulled when it was a necessity or somebody needed shooting.
Mass murder is always a possibility. it's just easier with a gun when no one can shoot back. Takes more planning without but it can be done.

Just a few degrees off topic, my grandfather hunted deer with a Winchester .351 Self-Loading rifle a few years before WW1 - over 20 years before the American military adopted the semi-auto rifle for infantry use. The point is that the civilian arms market drove what the military ultimately adopted - thus the argument that civilians shouldn't have access to the the types of weapons the military has is simply ludricous. The civvies got there first!

There have been no civilian mass murders with automatic weapons.
So the whole article is moot.
I would rather stand against the cannons of the wicked than against the prayers of the righteous.

In a crowded movie theater, most effective weapons for killing the masses would be a nerve agent, explosive, fire, firearms, hand weapons, and hands, in decreasing order. Of the firearms, a 12 gauge shotgun, (any semi-auto) loaded with #2, #1, #0, or #00 buck would be the most effective. So automatic weapons are not THE issue, nor ANY issue for that matter.
As we used to teach in the spook business, carry a 25 if it makes you feel good, but do not ever load it. If you load it you may shoot it. If you shoot it you may hit somebody, and if you hit somebody - and he finds out about it - he may be very angry with you. -- Jeff Cooper

Any one determined to commit such an atrocity is going to find the means to do it. Guns are a tool. The real danger is the person with the intent. The 911 hijackers committed mass murder without using an automatic weapon (and didn't even use one to take over the plane). Such articles are scare tactics. Guns are not the real problem, evil people are. Good people in society need guns to protect themselves from bad people with weapons.

A man, without force, is without the essential dignity of humanity. Human nature is so constituted, that it cannot honor a helpless man, although it can pity him; and even this it cannot do long, if the signs of power do not arise.
