I probably will just keep my mouth closed if I should ever be in a similar situation again. I'm always polite, even to the gal who put a $2000 dent in my truck...it is what it is, and dents can always be fixed.
Kudos for your politeness... I agree 100%+1 on the oddness of being asked for "his safety and yours" to hand him the gun... In my snarkier days, I might have asked "Bullets First?"

And I would certainly reconsider notifying in the future as a result of that encounter, were I you, and it not being a requirement. My plan is to notify as a courtesy... it will change if I am treated in such a manner... And I may state the following while lifting my shirt and offering the holstered weapon to him...

"Sir, you don't know me from Adam, you don't know that my moll (if the wife were in the car) and I didn't just shoot up a whole restaurant full of folks... and you want me to hand you my gun, for my safety and yours? Tell you what I will do, sir. I will expose my weapon in its holster and you may remove it from same on my side for your safety and I will trust mine to your competence in handling firearms with which you may be completely unfamiliar."

But I'm really glad it all turned out okay and hope the following days are far less eventful.
