There is a Light That Never Goes Out? How Soon is Now? Asleep? Man, their whole catalog can...um...put things into perspective. :)

A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

How about Country Death Song by the Violent Femmes? That one will send you to the depth of depression.

"Kiss Off" is my personal favorite of the Violent Femmes suicide songs. I forget what 8 was for.... :)

I really don't know the historical truth regarding the song but, this is the Billie Holiday rendition with the lyrics.
The Hungarian side of my Wife's family talked about it quite a few times. Most of them came to the US in the mid-1930s.

Watched an episode of “Dark Matters” on the Science Channel that featured the song, a rather gloomy piece but unless someone is severally depressed I do not see why it would cause them to commit suicide.

Sometime in the 1950s my cousin
was fascinated by this song. He is still
    here.

My preference goes to "be happy, don't worry. "
