    Private Investigators

I've recently decided that I'd like to get into the field and start a business with a friend. I've looked up the requirements for the license and such.

Is there anybody here that happens to be a PI and could give me some tips, advice, insight, etc.?

    Thanks in advance.

I did some work for a company in Maryland years ago.
It is not like the Rockford files. It isn't exciting and glamorous.
    A sample assignment:
Grocery store thinks an employee is skipping out on the clock and hitting the bar at the other end of the strip mall. You get to go in and buy something to visually confirm he is there by a certain time in the morning. You then get to sit in your car in the parking lot and watch the doors continuously until the end of your shift and report what time he leaves. It he leaves before a certain time you watch and see if he goes to that bar at the end of the shopping center. If he does, report what time he enters the bar and what time he exits the bar. After a week of this they will compare your notes with his time card.
Big fun. If you like watching paint dry.

I used to be a PI 20 years ago in Virginia. Check the state agency that regulates PIs for the various regulations required to operate a business and to be a PI. At one time Virginia required an apprentiship type program. You had to work for some one else for 3 years before you could setup your own business unless certain criteria were met. Also check on the bond requirements. This should get you started. It will take quite a bit of funds to start up but if you are in the right location there could be big dividends. Good luck and stay safe.

BTDT. Much boring work. Some acting as an arbitrator between two parties, one claiming assault against the guy who heard the vic was cheating with his (the accused's) wife.

Lots of contingent fee stuff. Neighbor on neighbor harassment, and dang little of the Sam Spade stuff.

    Can be interesting...but mostly not.
    All that said....
    It could be worse.
