Easy way to find the center of an object being measured. Take 5 inches for example it shows 2 inches for the center.

It's called a Centering Tape and it's designed for quickly and easily coming up with the exact middle of any linear measurement, mostly for those math. challenged among us. It just serves to confuse a lefty!

Red. Key word here. Red is seldom associated with anything good (think about it).
Point is...the tape measure is causing you to think more than you should. If you're cutting wood....all you need is the black marks. Tape measures such as the one you have (or the one pictured) are simply designed to confuse and confound the truth. That is an evil tape measure, and you should trade it in on a good tape measure.....one you can actually use. Manufacturer is telling you more than you want to know just because they think you want more than what you need. Sound familiar? Again.....red is not good. It's associated with too many bad things or it's universally associated with danger....warning....or STOP!
LOL! I aint no carpenter but I've cut plenty of wood using a decent tape measure and mine don't have half of all that stuff marked out. Keeping it simple never seemed so difficult as it does now. Big mark, little mark, half mark, and itty-bitty mark between the little marks and half marks.

Hmmmm...really it's quite simple. Generally you use the black markings everywhere you would normally use a tape measure. The red markings are for use when working on anything in any government building. Now you know where the phrase cutting thru the red tape came from.

It also makes it obvious why everything at city hall takes twice as long.....

I've been a carpenter for 24 years and have never seen (or needed) a tape like that. It's bad enough when a tape has the fractions printed on it.

If you know your goe-zintas like Jethro Bodine then you don't need those red markings. 2 goe-zinta 4 - 2 Times & so on.

But, really you only need to know advanced goe-zintas if you're going to be a scientist or a brain surgeon.
