Just happened to think of another that I've even seen plumbers do:
Hot water heater. Why would you heat hot water? Did they mean to make steam? Or, did them mean water heater?

    • Supposedly: considered probable or certain.
    • Presumable: capable of being presumed; acceptable as an assumption.
    • Presumably: by reasonable assumption.

Strange. One's considered a measure of probability of something being correct. The other's meaning relates to the acceptability (probability of likelihood) of an assumption being correct. And while they're both based on the same root-word suffix form (-able), they're spelled differently and technically used differently (at least, when used correctly).

Seems to me that if the root/suffix forms of both words mean essentially the same thing, then the spelling of the derivations would be the same: supposably / presumably. Not the case, though.

Nah. "To each (singular) their (plural) own" just don't hack it. Ain't you never herd that at the UofK?

One of my favorites to pick on: "If you think that, you've got another thing coming!" Nope, the correct expression is "you've got another think coming!" It means you better think again. For fun I like to ask people to complete that saying and I've been surprised at how widespread "thing" is used, but it makes no sense.

Here are a few I couldn't think of yesterday.

noone. That would be pronounced "noon". It's two words: no one.

faze. Nothing phases me, except people using "phase" when they mean faze.

sight. No one ever adjusted the sites on their gun, because sites are found on computers and the earth, never guns. Guns have sights, as do eyes.

    It's a moo point; you know, like a cow's opinion - it doesn't matter.

Lots of pent up anger on this thread. We have roid rage, road rage now spelling rage. If any of you ever go to a spelling bee please be so kind as to leave your weapons at home.
