Custer had two (2 count them) Gatling guns. He opted to leave them behind because they were heavy and so advanced for the time frame of 1876, he thought they would be of no use. He was afraid the Sioux would escape, and assumed that his 7th Cavalry was superior to just a group of "Indians."

One of the most fatal decisions in Military history. Had he used the Gatling's, the outcome of the Little Big Horn might have been a bit different. Instead, his pig-headedness and arrogance cost him dearly.

Meh, in his posthumous defense they would really have slowed down his built-for-speed cavalry... just like the infantry he turned down... and the Indians almost always scattered. So it's not like he knew his regiment would encounter 3,000-4,000 warriors that actually wanted a fight.

Now back to our regularly-scheduled programming.

For a guy who used the same tactics he had always used before successfully, GAC catches a lot of crap for the one-time failure of his formula for success. His cavalry attack against a exponentially-larger force when he plowed into Stewart at Gettysburg arguably preserved the victory at Gettysburg. Had it not been for his defeat in Montana, his legacy would likely have been one of relative obscurity, much like another Union hero at Gettysburg, Joshua Lloyd Chamberlain.
