The uniform he's wearing in the photo looks more like a Revolutionary War than a Civil War uniform. Aside from that I read a lot into that story. The guy was walking down the road in an old style military uniform, 50 miles from is home, and pointed a rifle at a deputy sheriff. It would seem drugs, alcohol, or mental instability are playing huge factors in this story.

Okay, first he's wearing a Revolutionary war uniform in the picture...
Second, he sounds like he only had one oar in the water to begin with

Oh yes...mental or drug issues... sure... flipping off passing motorists... yeah, he's a bit around the bend... for whatever reason... just an odd occurrence... getting all dressed up in a civil or revolutionary war uniform and going off like that.

I question anyone's mental stability who want to dress up and play war for fun.
I don't carry a gun to look for or start a fight. I carry one to finish a fight I never wanted to be in.

From the article:
DCI Special Agent Jeff Uhlmeyer said Dooley was
dressed in his Civil War-era uniform at the time of the incident.
quite possible the SA doesn't know one from the other...
the pic is Revolutionary era... but he wasn't riding the horsey, he was riding "Shank's mare," when shot.

DCI Special Agent Jeff Uhlmeyer said Dooley was dressed in his Civil War-era uniform at the time of the incident. He declined to say if the rifle was loaded, but said more information would be released soon. Uhlmeyer also declined to say why Dooley was in that area, about 50 miles from his residence.
Loaded or not pointing a rifle at Law Enforcement personnel generally has fatal consequences.

Disclaimer:
My opinion shouldn't be taken seriously due to the fact that I've been shooting guns for over 30 years and have only recently been active on gun forums, where all the real world knowledge apparently is.

One shot drop. Impressive.
As we used to teach in the spook business, carry a 25 if it makes you feel good, but do not ever load it. If you load it you may shoot it. If you shoot it you may hit somebody, and if you hit somebody - and he finds out about it - he may be very angry with you. -- Jeff Cooper

That is totally bizarre. Completely justified shooting. A muzzle loading rifle could have killed that officer just as easily as a modern firearm.

Guy doesn't sound too bright. I don't think flipping the bird was of the period.

A muzzle loaded AK47 assault rifle?
Well, it was the assault weapon of its day.

Oh, it preceeds that time period by a long shot.

Hmm, shows how much I know of that period. When I first heard Roe vs. Wade, I thought that was what Washington was contemplating before crossing the Delaware.
