Artist Paints Self-Portraits while 'high' on Various Drugs... Bath Salts and PCP...

I just stumbled on this through an artist friend on FB. The link below will take you to an online gallery of self-portraits that Bryan Lewis Saunders painted while under the influence of various licit and illicit drugs.

I think these self-portraits provide some insight into how one is affected by the various drugs. Some drugs seem to have absolutely crazy effects on how one views oneself (esp. Bath Salts and PCP), while others appear to be very calming.

How much can be gleaned from these self-portraits is obviously up for debate, and clearly different people will react differently... but I find the portrait series (which he has been painting for something like two decades) very interesting and thought my fellow DC's might too.

    Wow, very disturbing!
Probably the most disturbing thing is that he's wearing a "My Little Pony" shirt in the beginning.

If he's still alive I bet he won't be for long. What a waste of talent and life.
It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

"Talent" ... uh, if you say so.

Perhaps I am just one of those who can't appreciate "true" art.

Interesting that the "Balt Salts" self portrait looked like a zombie.

    Coincidence?

I can't believe this guy is still alive.

I like being creative but not to the extent of sacrificing my brain cells and lifespan. But it is pretty interesting nonetheless.

Gee......... says he slowed down after suffering 'slight' brain damage. Really now......?!?

Lima, I was thinking the same thing about the bath salts 'portraits'....... very much a coincidence me thinks.

I do believe that he is not going to be with us for too much longer. Some of his pictures you can see that he has the potentional to be a talented artist.

I write for a hobby (which explains the "grammar Nazi" tendency), and I always thought I wrote better after a few heavy shots of bourbon. Editing afterwards always proved that theory wrong. I sure as heck wouldn't try drugs to see if my writing improved.

Perhaps the artist was inspired by the military's tests of LSD, marajuana, an other drugs on its own soldier volunteers.
