Find your local beekeepers association (here's mine)
Apprentice under a master beekeeper, they will usually let you use and sell you their old used equipment. I worked for mine (providing free labor under his direction) for 8 weeks learning the ends and outs of bee keeping. During this time we worked up "my hive". The I bought the hive and he helped my move it to a friends of mines farm (about 3 miles from my house).
Total cost was around $600 and I am hoping to get another hive this year from my current one.

Honey lasts almost forever. They've found it intact in Egyptian tombs. Just buy some & store it.

Sounds like a lot of work for something you can go to Sam's Club for and come home with a life time supply.
If you want to do it as a hobby, it probably would be interesting.
I have a friend that has 4 hives but lost 2 of them last year to Bee Colony Collapse. He's not giving up though, he really likes doing it. He even goes to Beekeeper conventions (or whatever they call them).

I think Beekeeper Conventions are held in conjunction with Epinephrine Sales Conventions.

The problem with keeping bees and honey in a SHTF situation is marauding bands of Winnie the Poohs.

As most of you know I am a new farmer....well more of a hobby farmer I guess. My wife and i have talked about getting a hive or two but we have so many other things going right now it's on the back burner.
I think I may try to host someones hive and let them do the work for now as long as we get some free honey.

Dude, lighten up......

I would be Leary of buying store bought honey I heard some places have been adding corn syrup to the honey. I buy from a local man that has several hives. Honey made close to where you live is supposed to be good for allergies.

I don't consider honey as survival food, just something to pour over my survival pancakes.
