Casino Magnate Elbows Hole Through Picasso's 'Dream'

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 18) - Picasso's famed "Dream" painting turned into a nightmare for Las Vegas casino magnate Steve Wynn when he accidentally gave the multimillion-dollar canvas an elbow.

Wynn had just finalized a $139 million sale to another collector of his painting, called "Le Reve" (The Dream), when he poked a finger-sized hole in the artwork while showing it to friends at his Las Vegas office a couple of weeks ago.

Director and screenwriter Nora Ephron, who witnessed and related the incident in her blog on the Huffington Post Web site said Wynn had raised his hand to show the group something about Picasso's 1932 portrait of his mistress Marie-Therese Walter.

"At that moment, his elbow crashed backward right through the canvas. There was a terrible noise," Ephron wrote, noting that Wynn has retinitis pigmentosa, an eye disease that damages peripheral vision.

"Smack in the middle ... was a black hole the size of a silver dollar. 'Oh sh*t,' he said. 'Look what I've done. Thank goodness it was me."'

Wynn's office Tuesday confirmed the story, an account of which also appeared in this week's The New Yorker. Both accounts said Wynn had decided to release the buyer from the sale agreement and to repair and keep the painting himself.

Wynn, a millionaire casino developer and art collector, developed The Mirage and Bellagio resorts in Las Vegas in the 1990s, which spearheaded a profusion of luxury hotels and casinos on the once-seedy Las Vegas Strip.

LOL , Being familiar with some of wynn's business practices , imho it couldnt have happened to a nicer guy , besides unlike most i feel that Picasso rises to the level of art just below my grandsons pre school finger paintings . LOL

I don't know the guy's practices, but I figure that he's probably done something that makes this amount to "karma."

I feel the same way about Picasso's work that you do. It's crap, essentially. And a bunch of people who want desperately to have something to feel elite about tell us how great it is and look down on us for not seeing it.

I am really chuckling about this moron doing what he did. What a loser.

    Post The Mind Of Picasso

"I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them.

Painting is a blind man's profession.
He paints not what he sees, but what he feels, what he tells himself about what he has seen.

    Everyone wants to understand art.
Why don't people try to understand the song of a bird?
Why do people love the night, the flowers and everything around us without insisting on understanding them?

But when it comes to a picture, people think they must understand it.

If only they would realize that an artist creates because he must create, that he himself is only an insignificant fragment of the world and that no more attention should be paid to him than to many other things in the world which delight us although we cannot explain them.

When we love a woman, it does not occur to us to take her measurements first. We love with our desire."

Forgive my "Creative Work~Around" of the word "$h1t"

Picasso was a lousy painter. Claude Monet was a good painter. But Rodney Mathews is the best....

I would change the word just to well for a more accurate discription of my opinion of Picasso. I have some of the grandsons work on my refrigerator door but would not have the Picasso if you were paying me to exhibit it.
