Five is such a small number, for so many decent ones. Too bad the topic isn't by genre.

Overall, I'd say my favorite films are:

    The Godfather (trilogy)
The Lord Of The Rings (trilogy)
Grave of the Fireflies (1988, anime)
    The Legend of 1900
    Chinatown (1974)

    ==========

Lots of good ones out there, though, such as:

    Amadeus (1984)
    Being There (1980)
    Brian's Song (1971)
    Camille Claudel (1988)
    Das Boot
    Doctor Zhivago
    Dolores Claiborne
    Dr. Strangelove
    Gallipoli (1982)
    Gandhi (1982)
    Kagemusha
    Lawrence of Arabia
    Mars Attacks
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
    Ray (2004)
The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain
    The Great Dictator
    The Hudsucker Proxy
The Man in the White Suit
    The Princess Bride
    The Red Balloon (1956, short)
    The Shawshank Redemption
    The Usual Suspects
    The Way We Were
    To Sir, With Love (1967)
    When Harry Met Sally
    ... The 1,000 Greatest Films (a list)

Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.
    Thoughts: Justifiable self defense (A.O.J.).

Reason over Force: The Gun is Civilization (Marko Kloos).

I forgot about "Raiders of the Lost Ark"!

I so rarely go to the movies that I have a lot of catching up to do. Maybe I'll start a list of them.

CCW's right...by genre would be good. You know, Socially Redeeming vs Completely Ridiculous But Very Funny.

Yeah, I don't blame you, for filtering out The Godfather III. Can't often bring myself to see it, whereas the other two are still fairly great after all these years.

    1) The Godfather 1+2
    2)We were soldiers
    3)Saving private Ryan
    4)Goodfellas
5)Fight Club (I know, from my teen years, still have to watch it a couple of times a year)

Wow, that was hard. Some really good lists on here, I've got some movies to watch!

I don't know about Mrs Pettigrew but it sounds ridiculous enough.

Interesting that O Brother...shows up on a lot of lists. I thought I'd be nearly alone voting on that one! I just saw Hitchcock's Rear Window for the first time recently, one of my favs now...the suspense!!
