Sebring, Florida -- A Highlands County man is recovering after police say he was shot by an unlikely suspect: his pet dog.

35-year-old Gregory Dale Lanier was driving with his pet pooch on Saturday when the dog kicked a .380 pistol that was on the truck's floor.

Lanier thought the gun was unloaded, but quickly learned otherwise after hearing a "boom, saw smoke and felt a burning in his leg," Highlands Today reports.

The gun had discharged, firing a single round into Lanier's leg. He was not seriously injured.

No attempted murder charges are expected for Fido; police have ruled the shooting accidental. Sebring Police Commander Steve Carr says he never heard of a case like this before.

Makes you wonder sometimes, doesn't it?

This was posted the other day in the "In The News" section but got locked because it was in the wrong forum. My dog ate my homework, it was the dog that farted... my dog shot me... Really!

Nice guy to blame his dog for his own carelessness, huh?

Maybe the dog had attended an NRA-sponsored gun safety course but didn't pay attention.

Perhaps we should not dismiss this as an accident too quickly... had the man recently changed his insurance policy to make the dog the beneficiary?

I am wondering if the "owner" ignored Fido's pleas to stop at McDonalds to get the poor dog a burger. Hunger can make a dog quick to anger.

Can you imagine how dangerous Fido would be with thumbs?

The dog shot Lanier with his 9mm (dog has a CCP). THEN, he kicked Lanier's .380 on the floor to confuse matters. It worked too! Dog was not arrested.

If I carried a .380 on the floor of my vehicle, And my dog carried a 9mm I would feel a lot safer knowing that he had my back, but I would make sure to train my dog not to be so trigger happy like this pup. "Mans Best Friend" Just shot me in the leg dummy. There is no such thing as a accidental shooting, Guns don't accidentally shoot them self.

The dog should have recieved proper firearms training and none of this would have happened.

The dog should have been background checked.
