.......A bill designating March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day has passed the Alaska Legislature.
.......He says Vietnam veterans "were practically decried and persecuted for their service, instead of welcomed home" as heroes. He says that's a "national shame we will never live down."

If I remember right it was sometime in March 1975 The Vietnam War Ended officially.

What? No WWI Veterans' day? No Civil War Veternas' day? No War of 1812 Veterans' Day? Surely we have a Whiskey Rebellion Veterans' Day. Seems a bit discriminatory to me.
I thought we had a Veterans' Day in Nov. that covered all Veterans. I'm not much of one for preferential treatment. Nominating a "Day" in their belated honor isn't going to erase how they (I) were treated. If this country wants to do something, let the President apologise for the disrespect. That shouldn't be a problem as he well experienced in apologising.

He only apologizes FOR Americans, not TO Americans.

I understand where you're coming from but I think it's a good idea. Veterns of other wars were celebrated and treated well but for some reason, VN vets weren't. It's as if people took out their displeasure about the war on the soldiers who were drafted (for the most part) and sent there whether they wanted to go or not. I think any honors bestowed on them at this late date is a good thing.
Funny this came up today because just last night I was going through some old boxes and found a "Pacific Stars and Stripes" newspaper dated May1st 1975 with the headline in huge font: "It's over!". We lived in Okinawa at the time and I saved it.
