ENGLISH AS OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF USA?? What Do Y'all Think???
Pretty Simple And Straightforward...I don't know about anyone else here but I get plenty Irritated hearing upwards of 5 or 6 languages in a given day when out and about but I'm NOT HEARING ENGLISH...WHAT'S UP WITH THAT???
I mean if I were to Relocate to Switzerland I'd learn to speak Swiss and/or German Right??
If I were to move lock, stock and barrel to Holland I would Learn to speak Dutch wouldn't you??
Believe it Or NOT...Anyone immigrating to Mexico Has to learn to speak the language. Their govt demands it. Why Doesn't AMERICA DEMAND THE SAME??
I FEEL if you move to A NEW COUNTRY in order to PROPERLY ASSIMILATE INTO YOUR NEW LAND YOU MUST SPEAK OUR LINGO OR LEAVE. NO ONE IS MAKING YOU STAY...Unless Of Course You Have No Intention Whatsoever of Becoming An AMERICAN...What Say Ye??

This might be a little too off topic for this Forum. Don't know. I have been blessed with having been born here. Thank god for that. I also speak other languages.................
At the end of the day, it is interesting that other countries Demand that you speak their native language, but we do not (which costs us big $$$ in all kinds of equality work-arounds).

You need to make a trip to Miami. Good luck with English there.

Just a quick note for all of you that might not believe!
Learning English was a requirement to gain citizenship in the 60'a wile I was in school.
No interpretors when the tests for citizenship were taken. English was the only language spoken when the tests were given.
Now there are at least 20 different laguage interpretors needed in studying for and a swearing in ceremony so that everyone has an equal chance to understand what is being said.
Just another instance of inflated government catering to the uneducated masses which generates more votes for the "party".
The Constitution was to be studied, as well as a comprehensive basic understanding of our form of governemet
I do not know which party was responsible for the changes, but the most important requirement was learning and understanding English.
Erosion of the laws makes immigration into our country a simple thing. Come here, and we will cater to you in any form, so that you can be happy heere.
What is the government doing to enforce laws already on the books, NOTHING!
It is time to defend our country and send all of the unwilliing immigrants back if they can not, or will not, abide by the rules.
It is also time to FIRE the lawmakers and politicians that do not enforce those rules!
If we do not have the capability to defend our country with a militia that understands the language spoken, we have a hard time coming out of any conflict intact.
Just my two cents worth from 55 degree and somewhat dry Oregon

Two schools of thought of this.
One : I like languages, I know bits and pieces of them, even some Mandarin Chinese. I speak a bit of Spanish and it helps when ordering food in a Mexican place, plus it puts the fear in them knowing I "habla" their lingo. I get the best service and treated very well. Yet, many of them can and do speak English some better than others, but they do. When they find out I can speak a little of it, they accept me even more.
Two : A common language unites a people. If everyone speaks the same one dispite their culture or where they came from, it is a good thing to know how to speak the common language. You can keep your native tongue, that's fine. I knew an Italian family who spoke it in the home, but used English elsewhere. Learning English in a country that widely speaks English would be to your advantage, not the opposite.
English is the most widely spoken language on Earth, roughly 1 in 5 people everywhere speak some form of it. International Airline Pilots must speak English because it is used for that commerce. Most European countries make English their secondary language and students are required to take it in school. I had a friend go to Germany quite some time ago and he got lost in Berlin. He attempted to ask directions in German from a phrase book I got him and the stranger asked in near perfect English "where do you need to go?"
I have and would support English as our "Official" language because it is a uniting force behind us, and one that will be good for all our citizens to know.

I'm definitely for English being the official language. Jojo pretty much covered the reasons. It only makes sense. I have no problem with other languages being spoken but the Official language should be English.
There are many states that have already proposed this. MAP: In Which 31 States Is English the Official Language? | Fox News Insider

I learned Thai when I was stationed in Thailand, not a great deal, but enough to find someone who spoke English, which was about every other shop owner. I learned Spanish to some extent when I was in grade school in Miami (required due to the influx of Cuban refugees). Not to any fluent extent, but enough to get by. It isn't that hard.
I suspect most immigrants here know enough to get by, whether they let you know it or not.
