All you Army Vets- DA Form 638 for Army achievement medal

So I am coming up on the final stretch of my deployment. I am active duty Air Force and have worked a lot with the Army on my own time. My boss is asking me to write my own packages for medals and some of the Army guys I hang out with said I should write a package for an AAM, how many of you have wrote packages for AAM's and what kind of stuff does the Army look for? Do all 4 "achievement lines" need to be filled out? Or if I only have 2 or 3 will that work and at least get looked at?

Last time my supervisor told me to write my own medal package, I told him that if he didn't feel I was worthy of his writing it, I probably didn't deserve one. I got the MSM without writing a word.

I hear ya, but no one loves you more than you so I'm just gonna do it. Plus, I'm just an E3 so I figure it might look better upon myself if I take the time to do this. But I most certainly understand where you are coming from.

First of all, are you saying you are writing up an AAM for yourself and you are active Air Force?
OK, I have been outof the army for 6 years and admittedy did not work with junior enlisted my last 15 or so. The way I remember it is
    1. The AAM is for ARMY, not Airforce. You have your own medal
    2. If you are getting an award that is similiar and for the same acheivements you do not get to get two awards. If it is legal now, IMO it is in bad form
    3. If the award is for your "end of deployment" award, then you might qualify for a JSAM (Joint Acheivement medal). That is often given out incorrectly. Most folks don;t understand how the award shold be given
    4. You can not have two awards for the same achievement.....at least the Army was like that. I.e you can get a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for the same action. You can not get a Air Medal and Bronze Star for the same action. And again, unless things changed, you can't get an AAM, the AF equilvalant, and a JSAM at the same time.

Hopefully I understood what your post was about.

EDIT: upon reflection, I think you can get an AAM LOL.....But that would normally be given as an "impact" award, that is for a specific thing, not for service.
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

When I was a SrA the Army gave me 2 when serving with them as a member of a brigade support team. One for actions during an operation and one as an end of deployment.

Because you were in an Army unit. That makes sense. The OP sounds like he is in a Joint unit, AF unit, or a unit comprised of different services.

This is true. I figure the worst that can be said from the Battalion commander is "no".

And as a photographer, I have the "impact" I need for these different bullets. I embedded for various length of times with different Army units here on camp which is why I figured I could give it a shot. I have already wrote my jsam award and the AAM hadnt even crossed my mind until one of the specialist's I was with said I should give it a shot.

Wouldn't your JSAM and the AAM be for the same period of service and for the same service? Just saying.
