I am a veteran and don't want a military funeral. But, any veteran who wants one should have it with full military honors. They are playing taps through an iPod? Give me a break. These men and women served their country and deserve better.

Cutting out one Obama trip would cover the cost of every veteran's services.

Im not a veteran but I learned something I didnt know from that article. That the ones doing the honors are paid to do it? VFW etc? I didnt know that though ive attended and guarded alot of veterans funerals with PGR. And the idea that a bugle player and honor guard from a vfw or anyplace else is getting paid to do what they should do in the first place sort of sticks in my craw.

Everybody knows government needs to cut costs.

This is exactly how you do it. You identify things you don’t need, and you cut them. Maybe they’re nice things, but if you don’t need them, you cut them. Admittedly, this program is a small item, but as you go through the massive budget, you look for lots of small items. You try to trim big things, but that doesn’t mean you overlook little ones.
Well let’s just go ahead and start with a big one, disband the 86th MAW at Andrews after all if our glorious leaders need a ride they can just request an aircraft from the CRAF. Then send both of the B-747s used as Vacation One and the back up to AMARC to be properly mothballed until a President is elected. Then there is the Beast there is no need for such a lavish staff car when something like a Ford Focus will serve just as well and will get much better fuel mileage as long as the tires are properly inflated and it has a tune-up. Then there is Marine One, since Vacation One will be at AMARC it will no longer be needed and should be moth balled instead. These actions will save many millions of dollars and provide the funding for many military funerals.
When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk.

Ghost, if I remember from the article, the bugler gets $24.50 for the funeral. These people are not active duty military. They have jobs or are retired. So, they pay for their own bugle, own transportation, own cleaning and maintenance on their uniform. They stand outside in whatever the weather is for 45 minutes to an hour during the entire funeral. Then drive home. IMHO, $24.50 is pretty cheap.

    From the article:
"Everybody knows government needs to cut costs."
While he has a point this item should be on the bottom of the "cut" list if at all.....

Has someone posted this to the Patriot Guard Riders Forum yet? OK, I'll check.

That will send a message to VERY MANY people to stive to make shure he does not get elected again.

I think is is a good idea to post to PGR; however, I don't believe he is a politician. He is a "journalist".

Oh im not saying that 24 bucks is gonna break somebodys bank. A 100 bucks for a vfw team that likely is local to the funeral to come fire off the volley sounds a bit much.

If thats the way its done its the way its done. I just didnt know it and it just sort of hits me a little wrong. I and probably at least 200 guys ive met and 30 i know pretty well have ridden motorcycles in the pouring rain at 34 degees for 250 miles sometimes way farther one way to stand flaglines and escort military funerals and guard against protestors on a families invitation to do so.

For zip. no gas, up keep on bikes, nothing and proud to do it. But as I said im not a veteran and really have no right to be saying anything about how the other groups do what they do. I stand corrected.

And I bet this is the same guy who planted the flag on IWO JIMA, right?

This is the walking definition of a FOOL: never been there, never experienced the word "service", never suffered for his country, his life but his desk - but quite willing to spew opinions about the honored dead's burials - some of whom threw themselves on the pyre so this pin-brain had the freedom to sit in his own gasses daily. He's tempting the fates. The Law of Karma waits drooling for such people. I fear he will have many trip-and-falls before his life is over - when he gets to to meet those same Vets he spat on in life.

When my dad died last year, he had already picked out and paid for his plot, so we did not use the national cemetery. He also wanted a matching head stone with my mom's, so we got that. The only thing we got from the government was the GI insurance and a flag. We paid for the local VFW guys to come out and play taps and shoot the 21 gun salute. We could have gotten a free plot and headstone, but that was not what dad wanted.

I think that veterans' benefits should not be cut. If the family wants to do something else, fine, but we should not cut the benefits, including the GI bill.

I found dad's dog tags and they are on display in my office along with his flag and the three shells that were presented by the VFW guys.
