    My back hurts....

Today I planted 12 blue berry bushes, 15 elderberry bushes, 15 red crab apple trees, 15 persimmon trees, 20 Norway spruce trees, 1 ash and 4 Eastern white pines.

My back muscle tank pegged on empty and I called it a day with 16 Eastern white pines left for tomorrow. I am constantly reminded these days, after buying a farm, that I have a desk job.

You planted all that in your man cave? It must be crowded in there.

    Hope you feel better.

What! You did all that in ONE day?! You're gonna need a walker tomorrow.

Wow Timmy, and I thought I had tough "yard" work. I am not complaining about mine anymore considering what you have done.

However, it is tough to stay in shape and doing what you did gently reminds a person just how much. My buddy who was to the wall in strength training and such used to say "round is a shape." Trust me, I understand that concept. I have been skipping the work out for too long now and I'm sure the first round going back will end in a bad way for awhile.

We have three Blueberry bushes now, last year they produced untold hundreds of berries. My strawberry plants produce like they are on steroids and are now covered with blooms.

Elderberries grow wild all over my county so I can find them easy enough. Make them into jelly or jam, the raw berries are only good to eat if you have nothing else to eat. They also make good wine if you're into that. The huge white bloom on Common Elder can be dipped in pancake batter, fried and eaten. Dandelion bloom the same way. Get Peterson's Guide to Edible Wild Plants and see how much stuff you step on in your yard that is edible.

The Red Bud bloom is edible and so are the pods that grow afterwards. Get them before they dry out and saute them in butter.

Warning : Do not eat Persimmons until they fall off the tree and look purplish black. Eating an unripe one will turn your face inside out. They are also the favourite food of Opossums.

Take it easy now Tim and don't throw that back out. That would not be a good thing.

When I have the money I'm going to get some apple, peach and pear trees. I hope i can get them this year. If not, then I'll get them in the spring. Rome, and Timmy farm, wasn't built in a day.

I'm trying JL. If I had the money I'd have bought 200 trees.

I'd really like to get a nice orchard up and running. The sooner I get it in, the sooner it will produce. Every year I wait is another without apple pie and peach cobbler.

Back in 1991 I was staying with friends in north Idaho for a few days. Right after I was given the ropes of visiting the next town over (Spirit Lake) I promptly went out and broke most if not all of them. It was decided I was to be punished. My punishment was meted out by my planting tree starts. I planted around 20-25 before I ran out of gas. To say I feel your pain ATC Timmy is tantamount to the difference between ice and boiling water.

My dad's Uncle was the premier apple orchard owner in Wythe Co. VA for a number of years. When I was a Lad, we used to go rabbit hunting around Thanksgiving over there. Dad always filled up the pick up bed with bushels of Red and Golden Delicious Apples that his work buddies asked him for. He always made money on the deal too. That was when a bushel of apples cost $2. Now you can't get a bag of 10 of them for that price.

My brother who is a USAir employee in Charlotte lives over in South Carolina near a huge Peach Orchard close to Ft. Mill. I love the place. You can smell the peaches as they are on the trees.

One thing you should consider doing for the fruit trees is to get a couple of Honey Bee hives. Bees dearly love fruit blossoms and the honey produced with the nectar is absolutely wonderful. They pollinate the trees when they gather the nectar.

I can see it now, ATCTimmy...........Bee Keeper and Orchard dude!

^^^^^ Nope. Just me, a shovel and a dream.

It's raining this morning and I'm having a hard time finding enough dream to fuel me to go out in the rain for my last 16 trees.

Rest today, back at it tomorrow when the ground is really soft from the rain.
