Cool Who Here is a PREPPER?? Y'all can thank OldVet for this Thread...HUA

I was just in the Canned Meat thread...duking it out as it were with OldVet on the many flavors and choices out there. OldVet loves SPAM. He loves it fried. My step dad RIP, loved Spam fried up w/his eggs and toast. I know this as I once had breakfast with him and these were my choices. Well Ma and Pa raised me to eat what was put in front of me and Not Complain. So I dug in... It tweren't too bad. (I'm 1/2 Texan remember. We country folk got our own way of yakkin'...HUA)

Generally speaking and all things being equal I don't stock SPAM as a rule. However, as it stands I prefer food items that have the propensity to store FOREVER. Well boys and girls according to OldVet Spam IS one of those food items. Perhaps I should add Spam as part of my Preps.

OK I've got (and still eat from time to time) old MRE's from the mid 1990s. They still taste fine. I have new MRE's that are 5-10 years old or less. Considering there are some weird (to me) flavors they're OK. Tho I personally feel there should be fewer Vegan entrees. I'd always thought those people...Vegans and Vegetarians...stayed out of the Armed Forces. Oh well...we can't have it all our own way I reckon...
    ---------------------------------------------

OK that was my humor laced Intro...

Now for the Nuts and Bolts stuff. How many Preppers do we have here? Do some of you stock food, gas/fuel/POL, arms/ammo, spare parts, clothing/cold weather gear?

Right now just ammo. The weather here makes food storage a tough chore. Working on how to do it, but the wife doesn't like my idea of a bed made of #10 cans...

You can't store those #10 cans under the bed?

I like the way you think Cheesewiz. I store everything you've listed minus the GPS, tackle and booze. I keep all of my booze on my icebox and there's never that much. If I ever have to try fishing in a SHTF scenario I'll go the old WWII method with net and you know what. I keep buku chili, rice, beans AND TP. Me thinks you need to check your TP stash Cheesewiz... I hate to pay the regular price on stuff so basically I store bulk everything pretty much. Besides which in a pinch Paper Towels make fair TP...in a pinch.

Well Sir... I prefer a friendly Come on over... rather than just drop in uninvited. Dropping in uninvited can go sideways real EZ and real fast.

    Just sayin'...

Wut's a prepper? Someone who takes personal responsibility for themselves and their loved ones? That's the governments job.

Yes, I have gotten into prepping slowly but surely. I started with the guns and ammo approach, then realized you can't eat and drink guns and bullets, lol. I started with the basics, food and water for 1-2 months, then have slowly added to that constantly. I have gotten a decent stash of those and other useful things going. I find the more I add to it, the more it motivates to do more. We are starting to get into gardening, and looking to get into canning around winter. I have also been working on well equipped get home bags for each car, as well as a BOB. But all my preps are mostly for bugging in.

I really have enjoyed getting into it, as well as the comfort from knowing I have preparations made.

Nothing wrong with prepping, and we should all be at some level and never let ourselves be in the position to depend on the gubmint.

I encourage folks to have ample food supplies, and in the same note, I recently read a book (not a prep book) titled "Unbroken". It's about a guy who was held captive in a POW camp during WWII. It's amazing how long he lived, and did pretty good, with very very little food. He was malnourished, weak, and skinny, and I don't want to endure what he did, but we probably have more resilience than we realize.

Since we travel and sing we carry a survival backpack in our car. It has a 3 day supply for two people of food, water, radio, knife, and other things to survive if the need arises.

In our home we have a 3 month supply of food and water. Also we have defense weapons and several thousand rounds of ammo.

See websites Home | Ready.gov Plan & Prepare | American Red Cross | Disaster Preparedness and many others.

This thread reminded me of an aquaintance who purchased a whole 18 wheeler full of Dinty Moore beef stew to prep for Y2K because it was the only thing he could find that did not have an expiration date. It took him quite a few years to eat all that beef stew. It was just him and his wife at home.
