    Democracy Is an Illusion...

because the masses refuse to participate. In the small town of Prospect, located in Marion County, Ohio, a property tax levy was decided by slightly more than eight percent of the eligible voters. Sixty-five voters cast ballots in favor of the levy, while sixty-four voted against it. These 129 voters represented sixteen percent of those eligible to vote.

The other night I was watching kens 5, and there was a city council election in which the winner was elected by 1 vote, the result was 1-0 with only one voter. (small city outside of San Antonio)
I didn't even know there was an election so I didn't vote. If the election isn't advertised how are people expected to participate?

Democracy goes to those that show up. Or something like that.

I'm not going to complain about democracy. I'll complain about lazy people. But democracy is a pretty good idea.

It's a great idea, but not implemented. In the instance I cited, eight percent of the eligible voters decide the issue which will directly or indirectly effect everyone in that particular community.

Complain about the 92% that did not show up. Laziness is not the fault of the process. Unless there were some sketchy issues with the arrangements, it's laziness or apathy on the part of the voters that is the problem.

The 92% who did not show up are the point of the thread.

8% voted no so it's actually 84% that didn't show up. Many probably didn't show due to scheduling conflicts and many probably didn't care one way or the other. It's not ALL about lazy people.

I havenít heard any of the journalists who volunteered to be waterboarded asking to have their fingernails wrenched out with pliers, or electrodes attached to their genitals.

Voter turnout would be much higher if all it took was a 'Like' click.

Direct election by the people, as in this instance, is a function of democracy.

Correct. 8% determined the course for the other 92%.

Exactly. Some of those eligible may have been busy working, in hospital/bedridden, away for work/family, on vacation or myriad other reasons. Those who knew about it but chose to abstain wouldn't go to the polling station just to say "I'm not going to vote but let the record show I turned up".

Likely many of the non-voters are ignorant or lazy, but to say the 84% of non-participants are ALL that way is a bit presumptuous I think.
British by birth. American by choice.
