    Nephew injured

My nephew is a soldier in the army. He got into a fight in Alabama and I guess he is bleeding in his head. I guess he is awake and talking which is good.....first and foremost I pray he recovers.

It was a fight off post and of course alcohol was involved. My expereince is that when you get a bunch of young soldiers with alcohol and in a fight most if all are partly responsible.

I have been away from the army for 5 years or so and previous to that I had no expereince with junior enlisted for my last 15 years in the army.

I have a question for the Army leaders out there. What is the policy on alcohol related incidents like this. He is an E4 (P).

That is all the details I have. I was told he made the blotter.
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

    Sorry to hear that, suntzu.

Hope they get the bleeding stopped and he has a full recovery.

As a recently retired sailor when an incident like that happened within my command(s) it was handled as an 'alcohol related incident'... meaning you would get treatment for alcohol abuse ('training' more than an 'AA'-type treatment), possibly anger management, and a suspended bust at captains mast for a first time incident. As a senior NCO I had a few of these to deal with and it was handled on case-by-case basis with the individuals performance, attitude, and overall willingness to accept the responsibility for his actions dictating a lot of the outcome. The facts leading up to the incident were always taken into account.

Not a career-killer by any means, but a wake-up call and gut-check certainly.

I dunno if that helps any but I do hope your nephew recovers fully and comes outta this none the worse for this experience.

I was never in a fight when I was in but I was also far from a perfect troop too. However it turns out for him after he heals up and finds himself facing the music I hope he learns an important lesson.

I had a pretty bad concussion when I was just 18. No bleeding but I refused treatment so I've no idea if that might have contributed to my inability to get along with folks. I hope your nephew is smarter than I was when I was young.

Sorry to hear! I'm assuming the local LEOs have an issue with the fight? Then he'll need to answer to commander. Article 15 maybe the worst and back to an E2 with lost days and pay, but with the modern Army you never know!

    Again sorry to hear!

Thanks everyone. Still no details yet. Sounds like a typical fight, if their is such a thing. When I was a Platoon Sergeant long time ago with soldiers I had a similair situation (1990), Soldier was decent, not outstanding, not a troublemaker. He was in a fight with other guys. They were drinking and no one got seriously hurt. Mutual fight is the best way to describe it.
I recommended an Article 15 suspended punishment of reduction in one grade (E4-E3) with forfieture of 1/2 months pay for one month. 1SG and CO agreed. He didn't get in any more trouble and last I heard he retired as an E8. If he was a trouble maker like I had in Korea I would have recommended the max and not to suspend punishment.

According to his mom and dad he is a super soldier.....but aren't/weren't we all in the eyes of Mom and Dad
