Though charges were ultimately dropped, Tobey sued the TSA and the airport, and following a year and a half of legal proceedings the respective organizations involved have now settled. The details of the settlement read like an civil libertarian fantasy realized, and involve Richmond's airport security personnel being forced to brush up on American Government 101: Richmond International Airport officials announced this week that their security officers underwent a special two-hour training course on the First and Fourth Amendment rights of passengers as a part of a settlement with Mr. Tobey.

That's GOOD! Now we need a VERY good teacher or a Big Fat Powerful Court to tell the NSA that the 3rd Amendment is not followed by the 5th - and I don't mean their own "secret court". What is this, East Berlin in '64?

I for one hope that young man's settlement hit the NSA hard enough the agency will be walking funny forever.

I did that in 1986, which was when I vowed I would never go to another airport.

All they had was the metal detector in those days. I emptied my pockets, removed my watch, and even my glasses. The wand was so sensitive it kept going off at the zipper of my pants. Two more guards came out, and they wanted me to "accompany them to the security room for inspection." I told them I wasn't going into a room to be groped by a couple of [not PC in the 21st century], and they could do their inspection right out in public. I dropped my pants and had my shorts going down when they decided they really didn't need a detailed inspection after all.

The hassle was more than I was willing to take even then. I just shake my head in wonder at what people are willing to put up with in the 21st century.
