I seem to be posting a lot of news and stuff on here, but whatever. I read this and was appalled, at what point do we stop being nice and start actually punishing people, sure he is 14, but still, he can't even legally drive yet! Geez

An officer told the boys, “You could’ve killed somebody! Do you understand?”
It really is this simple. Punishment including civil service and fines should be the minimum, but to have that make an impact requires decent parental control at home (which, by the sound of things, doesn't seem to be the case). So, it's either bleedin'-heart, relaxed penalties, or a slap on the wrist that won't be felt as difficult by the kids.

In another couple year's they're going to graduate to truly adult crimes. They should be aware that, at some point, their actions are going to be met with truly adult responses (by would-be victims). They're heading for the grave, in slow, measured steps. Too bad to see kids go turtle so early.

The kids biggest worry is that they'll miss Christmas. They should be spending several Christmas holidays in jail, with the parents in a cell next to them!

Give 'em a taste of jail for a week. Then send them to someplace like Gunsite (failing = jail). Worst thing you can do is make these kids think that guns are cool because they will get them some street rep points.

There is some follow-up on the case. Guess there will be more next week. I would say that when criminal activity starts at 6, the parental control unit probably encouraged/taught it. (It's too bad my school quarter ended yesterday, I'm a criminology minor and would of liked to have brought this situation up to one of my professors. It could be a case to show a couple of theories rather well.)

Hmmm. Don't they have Juvenile detention centers there. There was a time when children broke the law they did a little lock up time and were released only when the parents came and picked them up.

Yeah, they still have juvy down there (not that I ever had to spend any time there). My Criminology classes leads me to believe that at 17 he will either be dead, or probably move onto more violent/ serious crimes. If y'all want something interesting to read sometime look up Wolfgang's "Delinquency in a Birth Cohort"(1972) study, which examines chroinc offenders and their upbringings.

    This is nothing new....

My mother used to work at a public school near Richmond, Va....in one of the counties nearby. About 10 years ago they had a student who didn't like to ride the bus to school. His answer was to steal cars from his neighborhood & use them to get to school.

This was done by a 14 year old at a MIDDLE SCHOOL. He also did it MORE than once.

I Don't Care If You Are...

    12 or 13 years old...
If you try to 'jack' my car or take my wallet, or bring harm to my family, using a weapon...you won't live to see your middle teen years (so don't worry about jail...)

    OMO...you may be more liberal...

^^ Yeah, he's a "big man," now. Let all his friends look up to him as the experienced one. Yeah.

Ret, I have never been described as liberal, and would also use whatever force neccessary to protect me and my family. I can spout off all the liberal theories I don't believe in as to why these young criminals are our fault, those are a load of horse crap, but I do need to get good grades, so I know em.

Hope that cop down in Florida is ok, thats a bad situation for him to be in.
