    Show me your wood!

I'm doing some seasonal redecorating and always redo the stuff on the mantle. This time the theme is wood, and here's some of what I have.

    mantle.jpg

    from left to right:
    - houseplant
    - hand painted wood candlestick, new
    - antique copper humidor (mother-in-law's ashes) plus candle
    - vintage toy 1903 Springfield, picked up at an antique store
    - vintage decoy (husband's family piece, I also have the hen) sitting on a
    - freeform, hand carved, cherry bowl my grandfather made for me when I was four. He was making this in the barn the same time he was restoring a 1925 Model T pickup and carving my brother a model airplane, and I remember the bowl sitting on his work table, half-finished.
    - elm bowl made by a student at the Narrow Gate Foundation. Husband won it in a silent auction.
    - houseplant on a tobacco box
    - tiny old pair of dutch clogs. Husband's family piece. Lots of Dutch on his side of the family.
    - cast iron coin bank of General Pershing. Craigslist find.

    on the wall:
    - vintage fruit crate label

I love handmade items, especially if it's made from wood. Even old furniture. I just finished restoring a Hoosier-style cabinet.

Now I know I'm not the only one who appreciates the skill that goes into crafting things from wood, and the texture, color and grain patterns. Old furniture, decor, your favorite wood grips or even your own handiwork - show me your wood!

Kind of along the lines of SNL "Killer Bee's" sketch...

    Cool

I have 9 pieces of wood furniture in my front room+2 chairs. Six of the pieces of wood furniture are handmade by 4 men and 3 of those my Grandpa made. All but one piece are done in a dark stain. The light piece is a small end table made from tipi poles.

My Grandpa was a carpenter. My favorite colors are OD and dark brown.

I have a Victorian era Revolving Bookcase. It looks like a table but isn't, the top swivels around and was used to house books as a person sat in a chair to read. I don't have a photo of it for all the clutter on it and the antique books placed in it. (will try to get a good photo of it)

I don't know how old it would be, my mom had a friend who's husband was a professional yard sale buyer and he came home with every manner of thing. She asked if I wanted it so I said yes, because she was going to trash it. I'm assuming 1890's to early 1900's.

I like older wooden furniture, it just has that classy appeal.

Now Mrs. Betty, with a title like that, you should have known this was going to happen.

I totally get that, but the amount of clever posts have outweighed the constructive ones. All these posts, and not even one picture of some good, solid ebony hardwood.

I just bought my first house last month, and it was built in 45. There is a built-in curio cabinet in the dining room with what looks like the original wood as it is the same as some of the very old doors. I'll have to snap a picture of it when I get home.

Betty I've got some beautiful antique civil war furniture I'd love to show off, esp the pump organ but do not own a digital camera.
