I found this interesting, particularly in contrast to a recent thread here citing a study ranking states by firearms laws. This study ranks the states' freedom based on a couple of hundred criteria, only 1 of which is gun laws.
Probably not surprising to most members of this forum, New York ranks dead last; but surprising to me at least was that one of the authors is on the SUNY faculty.
If interested, put the cursor on a state in the map to get its numeric rank. North Dakota is #1.

I was planning to move to Idaho when I retire, so looking good.
I know gun laws weren't a major criteria, but I find it interesting that the BOTTOM ten includes Connecticut, Maryland, Illinois, Hawaii, New Jersey, California, and New York.
Perhaps self-defense and gun laws are simply tracking with other freedoms being held lightly by citizens or their leaders.

I can't get Spotted Cow anywhere but Wisconsin. That alone should have given us an extra 10 points.
They give a HUGE weight to Gays. If gay marriage is not legal then it is a BAD state.
If you arrest someone for drug use, you are a BAD state.
In effect, it is their opinion that everyone should be free to be gay and a drug user. Sounds like just the kind of place I want to live - its called San Francisco.
