a measurement of freedom in the USA by state

I found this interesting, particularly in contrast to a recent thread here citing a study ranking states by firearms laws. This study ranks the states' freedom based on a couple of hundred criteria, only 1 of which is gun laws.

Probably not surprising to most members of this forum, New York ranks dead last; but surprising to me at least was that one of the authors is on the SUNY faculty.

If interested, put the cursor on a state in the map to get its numeric rank. North Dakota is #1.

That settles it... moving to North and/or South Dakota.

You know, I could have guessed for a long time before I named Rhode Island as one of the top 5 states for bachelor parties...

How far the state has moved up or down in the rankings since 2009.

I was planning to move to Idaho when I retire, so looking good.

I know gun laws weren't a major criteria, but I find it interesting that the BOTTOM ten includes Connecticut, Maryland, Illinois, Hawaii, New Jersey, California, and New York.

Perhaps self-defense and gun laws are simply tracking with other freedoms being held lightly by citizens or their leaders.

I like that site. That was a fun way to spend 5 minutes. My state wasn't too bad considering all the lefty yahoos here.

No surprises at the top or bottom, with the rest of us somewhere in the middle.

West Virginia ranked #42 overall but #9 in "personal freedom". Interesting.

I heard yesterday that N. Dakota has a 2% unemployment rate! That's amazing. Well done North Dakota!
South Dakota is #2, so they're doing something right in the Dakotas.

I can't get Spotted Cow anywhere but Wisconsin. That alone should have given us an extra 10 points.

They give a HUGE weight to Gays. If gay marriage is not legal then it is a BAD state.

If you arrest someone for drug use, you are a BAD state.

In effect, it is their opinion that everyone should be free to be gay and a drug user. Sounds like just the kind of place I want to live - its called San Francisco.
