    Penny Lane

So, basically, with the massive amounts of inmates being detained at Gitmo, the brilliant thinking heads came up with the idea of paying inmates with significant ties millions of dollars and re-locating their family in exchange for information. This was of course a case of "don't call us - we'll call you" and chosen inmates lived in off-prison housing quite similar to dorm rooms. They'd also be paid in pornography, sex and drugs. In agreement, they'd undergo training at the secret base where they lived. This became so common, extreme Islamist groups became skeptical of any previous (and new recruit) member who spent time in the prison and was released.

I forgot to add to my OP:

One of the main concerns was to pay a prisoner and him end up being released and killing Americans. So, you'd have reports on the news of a CIA-paid informant being behind the killing of Americans. This obviously was a risk they were willing to take. As far as I can find through research, there hasn't been a case of an "operative" being behind the killing(s) of an American. Of course, that means nothing. If I were them, I'd do everything in my power to keep that information covered up as that's the type of screw up that gets named after you.

There were other risks involved, but that was indeed the biggest one. Is that a risk you're okay with? Is it a risk you'd be okay with ordering if you were calling the shots? If not and even if so, can you think of any better, viable alternatives to gathering the same degree of intelligence?

I know such threads lose some merit when the OP's 'position' isn't outlined or mentioned, so here's mine.

IMO, it's a great idea. One I'd have probably come up with if I found myself in such a position of power. Even despite the arbitrary reasons for detainment, prisoners "of value" would be caught. Big fish would end up in the huge "dragnet" cast, if you will. As long as the informants kept their mouths shut and didn't kill any Americans, the money was well spent. Besides, what's a few million when you're discussing CIA funding and accounts? Pocket change, that's what. The majority of informants actually happened to be older Muslims who were pissed off by the extremism the current groups exhibited and condoned. In short, they were bothered by what their religion became and they decided it was worth risking life and limb to try and change things. Once again, IMO. these are the un-sung hero's of the war. It's impossible to gauge the value of intelligence brought forth by these informants since that information will never be released.

I look forward to reading other's view points on the matter. I think it'd be an interesting topic of discussion.

    Good grief.

This makes about as much sense as Obama giving Iran $8 Billion of our hard earned dollars.
