Question For You Folks Who Find All These Bogus News Items

There have been several bogus news reports put up here lately: grandma shoots two knockout kingers; Brooklyn vigilante Boston Legal's a couple more; Walmart shoppers killing each other for bargains. I'm curious, how do people even find these stories in the first place?

Honestly, my best guess is twitter and/or Facebook. I have heard many false stories from people citing twitter or Facebook. When I ask them where they heard it and they reference social media, I generally disregard it until further documentation backs it up

What often happens is someone finds the story, puts it in an email and mass mails it. Other people pick it up and mail it again, soon it is viral and people don't check the original source. I used to get a lot of mass emails like that until I started telling people to either take me off their mass email list or I was going to punch them in the throat.

I think it is really simple:

    1. Folks read something that fits thier world view and beleive the stories because "of course, the article verifies what I have been thinking. And of course what I think is correct"
    2. Folks for some odd reason do not fact check.

When a story is verified as a hoax, folks fall back on step 1 above and rationalize that though THIS story is not true, it is something that COULD happen.

I posted this in another thread (I got the original from another forum)

    humb:

Any website/publication with the following words in the title are not reputable:

    -Liberty
    -Freedom
    -Progress
    -Constitutional
    -Daily

They're usually far left or (more commonly) far right publications made for crackpots, by crackpots.

And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

That does not explain why forum member post the stories. That is an explanation for the ease of viewing these bogus articles.

People get this stuff because they want to believe the first thing they read and no one wants to take the time to check if the story is even true.

Some folks talk for communication. Some folks talk just to attract attention to themselves.

Some folks post articles for the purpose of passing on truthful, interesting information. Some folks post articles for the purpose of posting something.

Atlanta (AP): The blog sites on which PEF publishes his false reports appear quite authoritative.
