Not even tanks are idiot proof.

If you’re going to drive a 50-ton battle tank, remember that you may need more than the owner’s manual to make it work.

A 58-year-old Curry County man learned that lesson the hard way last week, said Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Police.

On Nov. 27, a truck driver transporting a 1969 Chieftain battle tank found that he was unable to climb a steep grade near Gold Beach. So he unloaded the tank, which was the United Kingdom’s main tank back in the 1960s, at the Myers Creek Wayside along U.S. 101. The tank was purchased by a local resident.

How would you like to have this coming down the hill at you.

I'm sure I can't be the only tanker here with something witty to say?

I must admit, I'd be tempted to take that bad boy for a spin, too.

The funny thing (to me at least) is I was told to learn to drive an M901 by reading the manual.

Seriously, how many here would not have attempted it? There but for the Grace of God, go I.

I spent time as a crew member on an M42 Duster Tank in Viet Nam. I wish I had an operational one now for trips to the range. Twin 40mm guns and an M2 50 BMG were fun to shoot. We started a few fires with the tracer rounds.

While not technically a tank, I really want one of these:

Unfortunately I'd have to move to England to easily obtain one so that's a deal breaker for me.

Tanks and idiots don't mix well but when properly mixed they generate some good stories as long as they happen to your wingman.

Yep, I would be one that just had to try to drive it. Not so sure I would have made the same mistake twice though.

I don't think I could fix the damage I would cause if I had a tank.
