Three suspects in custody after fatal shooting at Boynton Beach Mall

BOYNTON BEACH -- A mall packed with 20,000 people erupted in gunfire Sunday afternoon, scattering Christmas Eve shoppers and leaving one man dead.

Police have three suspects in custody.

    LocalLinks
The 140-store Boynton Beach Mall was evacuated after the incident began about 2:30 p.m.

It began near J.C. Penney when a fight broke out. One man pulled out a gun and shot another man. Two Boynton Beach police officers, working off-duty security in the mall, began chasing the shooter, who was firing back at them.

"The suspect ran through the mall and began to fire at officers as they were chasing him through the mall,'' Boynton Beach Police Lt. Jeffrey Katz said.

They chased him into Dillard's women's store, and police used the store's public-address system to try to talk him into surrendering.

Police finally cornerned the man in Dillard's and took him into custody without other shooting, Katz said.

Traffic around the busy mall, already congested with last-minute shoppers, turned into gridlock, police said, and Delray Beach police and the Florida Highway Patrol was called into help move thousands of cars out of the mall lots and away from the area.

A helicopter from the Palm Beach County sheriff's Office circled the mall.

Inside the mall, shoppers watched in horror as the victim lay in a puddle of blood after being shot.

Sinette White, 19, of Lake Worth was having her nails done when she heard popping sounds. It sounded like something had fallen.

    Then she saw the body.

Shoppers gathered around the victim on the mall floor, and police arrived to give CPR. But then they heard more shots, White said, and police ordered them to disperse.

The mall intially was locked down, White said, and they had to stay in the nail salon for about an hour before the mall was evacuated.

Today the mall had opened this morning at 8 a.m. for Christmas Eve shoppers, was was scheduled to close at 6 p.m.

Mall officials said the mall has been closed for the rest of the day.

The mall is at 801 N. Congress Avenue between Gateway Boulevard and Boynton Beach Boulevard just west of Interstate 95.

Not a Big Update from Channel 4 Miami:
(CBS4) BOYNTON BEACH Police reports are saying that one person was shot and killed after the gunman, who is now in police custody, allegedly opened fire in a south Florida mall Sunday afternoon after an altercation got out of control.

The shooting started after a fight broke out inside the Boynton Beach Mall, 901 N Congress Avenue, Boynton Beach Police Lt. Jeffrey Katz said. A couple of other men were also being questioned about the shooting, but Katz could not give an exact number.

"The suspect ran through the mall and began to fire at officers as they were chasing him through the mall," according to Katz.

Police said SWAT team members arrested the suspect after he barricaded himself inside a Dillard's store. No officers were hit and no shoppers were injured, Katz said.

The victim was shot in a common area of the mall, not inside a store, but it's unclear what sparked the shooting, mall spokesman, Sam Yates said.

The mall includes a Dillard's and J.C. Penny along with over 100 more stores. Christmas Eve is traditionally one of the busier shopping days as people attempt to do their last minute holiday shopping, Yates said.

The names of the victims and the shooter have not been released. Mall officials said the mall has been closed for the rest of the day.

I have taken to carrying in the malls when shopping this Christmas. I used to leave the pistol in the car but realized it felt kind of warm and cozy in my pocket.

Local malls are one of the things high on my 'reasons to carry' list. Cops don't patrol these malls, just wonderful elderly mall security guys that are to busy checking out the girls to even stop shoplifters.

I used to do some mall security. My father in law is a mall manager. Mall security is there for the patrons of the mall, NOT for the stores. Yeah I know it sounds really stupid, but that's the way it is.

Gang Violence Suspected In Boynton Mall Shooting
One Man Was Killed, Shoppers Ducked For Cover
Police Suspect Gang Violence As A Possible Motive
    Boynton Beach Police: 561-742-6139

    Ted Scouten
    Reporting

(CBS4) BOYNTON BEACH Police say gang violence might have been the motive for a fatal shooting the created chaos inside the Boynton Beach Mall on Christmas Eve.

Witnesses reported seeing a fight break out among several men Sunday afternoon, which shortly escalated to shots being fired. Some shoppers ducked, others dropped to the ground and others ran off, trampling over each other in some cases, though no serious injuries were reported by bystanders.

"People started running in all different directions and cops were running by with guns held out in front of them," said mall employee Ron Wise.

Boynton Beach Police charged 21-year-old Jesse Cesar, of Lake Worth, with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder of a police officer. Lt. Jeffrey Katz says Cesar was the one who shot 23 year-old Berno Charlemond, and then tried shooting at officers as they tried to catch him inside the mall. Officers did not return fire. SWAT team members arrested Cesar after he barricaded himself in part of a Dillard's store and refused to surrender when officers contacted him through the public address system, Katz said.

Gee, gang violence. Who would have guessed? But the good thing is the anti's will be more than happy to count this as a reason to ban handguns. Thereby lumping all of us with the gang bangers. (/sarcasm)

WOW the show of restraint by the officers for not returning fire is pretty impressive.

OK not to hijack the thread but this poses a good teaching and learning case. The kid doing all the shooting begins to run past you and your family as your trying to exit the building with everyone else. You have your weapon. As he runs past you he continues to fire at police. (from the artical it doest say if his shots were aimed at anyone else so lets assume he was not aiming the weapon at the crowd). He is obiously putting the police officer's life and others at risk of bodly injury and or death. WOULD YOU shoot him if you had the shot?

For myself it would not be a tough call.... what about you?

I'm thinking that a Grand Jury would seriously question the validity of a citizen using deadly force when sworn officers chose not to.

Tony, believe it or not, I haven't seen, heard or read almost anything coming out of the Antis. Murder overall in the county OUTSIDE this area is down. There has been some civilian events (Church prayers, vigils, etc) trying to bring the violence down and even Al Sharpton came down here to promote peace but I have not heard from the Brady Bunch.
