Was your IRS and/or state refund seized?

... for a decades old debt, owed by someone in your family?

I found out about this from my Senator, Chuck Grassley, who told the story here and linked to the original Washington Post story.

    story from Chuck here

    Original Washington Times story here

    What, no statute of limitations?

I'm glad they are revisiting their policy... but they made the mistake... The deceased might be responsible to some degree... but jeez, her offspring? Thirty some odd year later? That's just wrong.

Hard tellin' how many innocent people who have no idea their parents or perhaps grandparents, got overpaid.

Sounds like someone's estate failed to file a final tax return.

On SS? 37 years ago? Even the IRS won't come after you that far out.

No, they don't... But they allow another agency to, apparently.

They seized all of mine - to pay for 6,000,000 illegal aliens, sneakers, and a kilo of crack for the white house residence. You get what you pay for.

Used to be a 10 year statute of limitations but the farm bill apparently gave the federal government a loophole or a method of extending that limitation. This is the consequence of allowing the federal government to go beyond their Constitutional limits by a public that seeks a guarantee of equal outcomes instead of equality under the law.
