Question SO - what the heck are Super Foods?

A few people on this forum have asked me to start a thread about eating healthy, or about super foods. I have thought long and hard about this and here is my attempt to share information about some foods that really are healthy.

If you know anything at all about cooking, healthy foods will NOT taste like cardboard! In fact, you can produce the most delicious meals you've ever tasted and do it all with foods that will make you so healthy that many (or sometimes all) of your medical problems will disappear.

NO ONE CAN PROMISE a return to complete health, but you can learn which foods help you and which ones hurt you and this makes a huge difference, not only in how you feel, but also in your waistline..........

If YOU are interested in learning about Real Super Foods, I am asking that you go to

    The World's Healthiest Foods

where you will find a list of over 100 of the world's healthiest foods with all of the information you could want about the nutritional and health value of each of them, PLUS recipes and even suggested meal plans.

More comments coming in further posts..........

    How many ARE there?

Are ALL of the healthiest foods listed on the The World's Healthiest Foods website? NO. There are more, but this is the prime list complied by George Mateljan and his staff of professional health care and nutritional experts.

I would suggest that you buy the book, but it has been so popular that it is totally sold out. However, George and "friends" are working on an updated version which will be published as soon as they complete it to their satisfaction.

The original book quickly became my "cooking Bible". I have cooked several full holiday meals using George's recipes and in every case all of the people who ate these "HEALTHY" (OMG) foods not only praised the cook (me), but most went back for second helpings!

I own the original book and am definitely going to buy the new version when it comes out.

However, what you CAN do now is sign up for the free newsletter which will bring you news about various featured foods plus recipes every single day. That's worth having!

Bear with me - one more post about you and what you eat.........comin' up

Are they ALL good for me?

Not everyone can eat and/or digest all foods. If we truly listen to our bodies we will each wind up eating the most beneficial foods for our own body - and skipping the other stuff.

How do you "hear your body"? I'll give you one example and then close this already too long thread: For years every time I ate spaghetti with tomato/meat sauce I had to be careful to not bend over because I knew it would come back up. I simply was not digesting the wheat pasta, the tomatoes OR the beef! I was doing a triple whammy on myself and my body was yelling at me, "Hey I can't use this stuff!" NOW we eat Tinkyada brand rice pasta, sauce that looks and tastes like tomato sauce but has no tomatoes, and turkey meatballs made from turkey that has been properly raised, outdoors, with no antibiotics.

And my tummy likes me again! OH YEAH - and my picky teenage grandchildren love my new style spaghetti - they come back for seconds also.

There are other things I can't eat for very good reasons, but we eat a wide variety of really healthy food AND, BTW, we both have lost significant weight (I lost over 30 pounds) and kept it off for over 5 years!

Visit The World's Healthiest Foods regularly and often. Listen to YOUR body. Feel great, look better, lose weight and all that good stufff!

Want to add more super foods?

    HAH - challenge time!

That means you first have to read George's list.

But, after you do that, if you have a super food you think is worth while for the rest of us to know about, please post here with complete information about it. This means COMPLETE - with calorie, vitamin and mineral information plus what specific health benefits that food items provides.

There ARE other incredibly healthy foods beyond the 100+ on George's web site, and it could be fun and helpful to share the information with each other.

And, as usual, please don't send me letter bombs because I issued this challenge.

whoops - book can be found

I just checked on line again and The World's Healthiest Foods book CAN be found - used - at a slightly higher price than I paid for it new. On Amazon:

Amazon.com: Buying Choices: The World's Healthiest Foods: Essential Guide for the Healthiest Way of Eating

When a book sells for more money used than it did new, to me it does say something about the value of the book. If you want the full story and the full scoop, it is still available.

Though, if you get back to making everything from scratch and going raw/natural, it's surprising how simple erasing industrialized sugar can be.

Takes making your own soup, eating raw veggies and fruits, not having manufactured/packaged/canned anything unless it's raw/straight stuff.

Don't buy any packaged stuff for 6mos. Just don't. Nothing in a package or can or bag. Go fresh, real, raw. And stop doing the mystery-meat-Mondays at restaurants, 'cause who knows what is put into the vast majority of noodles, breads, casseroles, sauces, soups, toppings and condiments at such places. No control, there.

If you're going to have things like tortillas or breads, you can find sugar-less ones or make your own. If you're willing to spend one day every few months baking, you can do up a half-dozen loafs of great sprouted bread without the additives, leavening, preservatives, sugars, flours and other crap that'll get you in the end.

Same with soup, which you can make one day every couple of months, then freeze the rest of the batch you've made. Plus, there are tons of (vegan/vegetarian) non-animal alternatives that have high protein content and decent amino acid spreads, ones that don't have cholesterol. Add to that naturally occurring meats (if you do meat), you can avoid the GMO/antibiotic issues involved with the industrialized stuff.

What I no longer miss: the sugar in things; the high carb load in things; the higher percentage of saturated/cholesterol-laden fats in things, particularly animal fats. Amazing how much your tastes and "cravings" change after getting off the merry-go-'round.

What I need: 100 acres for a few goats, a bison or two, rows of high-protein veggies, all fresh and organic fruits and veggies ... and a "magic button" to press in order to harvest it all, can it, butcher/pack it. Hm.

Thanks, Granny, for the links and the PM's back when. Am still reviewing things and continuing to make minor changes here and there.

Most of my changes have been over the past handful of years. One by one, I've nixed the ugly stuff from the pantry, grocery aisles, restaurant choices. One by one, I've created DIY "raw" alternatives where I make it myself, at home, thus avoiding all the added industrialized crapola (from preservatives to thickeners to slickeners to emulsifiers to flavor "enhancers", and everything else in there that Nature didn't intend).

These days, I have a hard time recalling the last non-natural, fabricated thing that's passed my lips. Just call me a knuckle-draggin' cave man, in that sense. And that's as it should be ... both ways, I suppose.

Now, how to make a great, aged peach-apple brandy ...

Me too! I've been using my new "Ninja" blender and making smoothies for breakfast almost every day. My favorite one has bananas, frozen sweet cherries, Greek Vanilla yogurt and Almond milk in it. Honestly, it's like having a milkshake for breakfast.

I grew up on a farm and everything we ate came from our garden. Totally organic.

    No MSG.

When I was in high school and went on my first date, a boy took me to a Chinese restaurant and I overdosed on MSG.

I had to go to the emergency room.

I'll never forget that horrible feeling.

And I agree with ccw9mm. Sugar is very destructive.

I've eliminated sugar, milk and meat from my diet and I feel so much better.

I sleep better at night - and I have more energy during the day.

Thanks for starting this thread, shooter granny. Good info.

It's only $15.99 on the Kindle. I just sent a "sample" to mine.
