Man knocked unconscious wakes up a Math genius

This guy was on FOX the other day talking about what happened to him and how it changed his life. I'm SO fascinated by it. It goes to show you how much we still don't know about the human brain.

Man becomes maths genius after head injury - Unexplained Mysteries

Here's the book he wrote, I plan to read it soon.

Amazon.com: Struck by Genius: How a Brain Injury Made Me a Mathematical Marvel eBook: Jason Padgett, Maureen Ann Seaberg: Kindle Store

This is part of the review on Amazon:

"No one sees the world as Jason Padgett does. Water pours from the faucet in crystalline patterns, numbers call to mind distinct geometric shapes, and intricate fractal patterns emerge from the movement of tree branches, revealing the intrinsic mathematical designs hidden in the objects around us.

Yet Padgett wasn’t born this way. Twelve years ago, he had never made it past pre-algebra. But a violent mugging forever altered the way his brain works, giving him unique gifts. His ability to understand math and physics skyrocketed, and he developed the astonishing ability to draw the complex geometric shapes he saw everywhere. His stunning, mathematically precise artwork illustrates his intuitive understanding of complex mathematics.

The first documented case of acquired savant syndrome with mathematical synesthesia, Padgett is a medical marvel. Struck by Genius recounts how he overcame huge setbacks and embraced his new mind. Along the way he fell in love, found joy in numbers, and spent plenty of time having his head examined. Like Born on a Blue Day and My Stroke of Insight, his singular story reveals the wondrous potential of the human brain."

Along with the science, physiology and human interest of this, there are lots of jokes in there...so have at it!

I will not allow myself to get mugged just to get smarter...

That said, it is fascinating... The mind is a truly marvelous machine.

There's a new series on ABC called Black Box that has a severely bi-polar Neurologist that goes off her meds on occasion... It's interesting.

You can probably watch the pilot on line.
    Rats!
    It could be worse!
    I suppose

I could never whistle until I hit my head on a table chasing a raccoon. As I was getting my head stitched up in the ER I discovered I could whistle. I was 25 at the time

All I ever got from getting hit in the head was stitches. At least my parents got the ER bill. Of course how much could the ER bill have been 40 years ago?

JL there are those that say my Mother dropping me on my head is what caused who I am today. Others say she should have clubbed the baby and sold the milk.

I, on the other hand, have been knocked unconscious numerous times and can't remember . . . Aw crap, what was it? But I've always been pretty good with arithmetic.

I was rocked to sleep in a door way, that explains my flat head and flat feet.

The only thing I've ever received from a hit in the head was a headache.

Yet at the end of the day, his wife still thinks he's an idiot, guaranteed.

Statistically, dementia is one of the greatest defeatable threats to my loved ones. The solution is to fund charities that hunt for a cure. This will also reduces the total amount of family that has to go through it. I'm basically racing against odds.
