Guns and The Boyscouts of America

National Public Radio interviewed a US Army general who had started a
Boy Scout troop for the sons of officers. The interviewer asked the
general if a Boy Scout troop on a military base learned things other Boy
    Scouts did not.

"No, we follow the standard program," the general said. "We teach them
about honor and responsibility, we teach them wilderness survival
skills, and we give them instruction in canoeing, archery, and how to
    shoot a rifle."

"Why are you teaching these boys how to shoot, General?" asked the
    interviewer.

"It's an outdoors skill," the general answered. "It's no different than
learning how to pitch a tent in the dark or start a fire without
    matches."

"But isn't putting a rifle in the hands of children irresponsible?" the
    interviewer replied.

"No. We teach them that a rifle is dangerous and not to be played
with. And they are closely supervised at all times while on the rifle
    range."

"But by teaching these boys how to shoot a rifle," the interviewer said,
"don't you see that you are equipping them with the kind of skills that
encourage them to become violent killers?"

The general was silent for a moment, and then said, "Ma'am, you're taking
this to an extreme. Just because a man has a gun doesn't mean he's a
murderer. One could say that you're equipped to be a prostitute, but
I'll bet you aren't one. Are you?"

Some people are just idiots! There has been a marksmanship merit badge almost as long as there has been scouting. The wierd thing about the badge is that only in the last few years are Scouts allowed to shoot flintlock rifles.

(How many Eagle Scouts do we have here?)

I am a BSA Merit Badge Counselor for Shotgun and Rifle. I like working with the Scouts. We have good groups and good leaders in my area.

I think they tried to pin this interview on a Former Marine as well.

I missed the last paragraph somehow, if I'd noticed it I'd have known. This has been around before, and that last statement was always the giveaway!

Guys, I know that this isn't a true story, it's a joke and that is why I posted it in the HUMOR section of the site.
None-the-less it is a telling story of how many in our society have come to view guns and their owners.

Sorry, I got to the thread via the new posts page and wasn't paying attention to which forum I was in.

I just wish anyone had said it on NPR. I would die laughing. I am one of those irresponsible individuals arming America's youth. Oh and proud of it.

And we're proud of you for doing it Scott. I would donate the rifles, tagets and ammunition to our local school if they would start a program like they used to have in the "old days"....

Even though its not true, its still entertaining, and gives you another comeback in case you're talking to an anti.

I'll warn you though, before using that line, you need to know if she's right or left handed, and have your defensive hand empty at the time. Well, it doenst have to be empty, but a full glass of your favorite beverage is not something you want to have in your hand at that moment.
